Abstract

An apparatus for cosmetic RF skin treatment where the RF energy supply is isolated from the patient treated, such that in course of treatment no undesired current flows through the subject body.

Claims

1. A skin treatment device, comprising:

an applicator tip;

a ground electrode arranged on the applicator tip, the ground electrode being configured for contacting epidermis of skin of a patient and being further configured for connection to a circuit for delivering RF energy to the skin, the ground electrode having a ground electrode surface area; and

a plurality of RF application elements arranged on the applicator tip, the RF application elements having a combined application element surface area substantially smaller than the ground electrode surface area, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are configured for connection to the circuit for delivering RF energy to the skin,

wherein the plurality of RF application elements are free of any ground electrode therebetween.

The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are arranged in a cluster of a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns on the applicator tip, and wherein the ground electrode is arranged on one side of a periphery of the cluster, segregated from the plurality of rows and columns with a gap between the ground electrode and the cluster.

The skin treatment device of claim 2, further comprising at least one additional ground electrode, the at least one additional ground electrode arranged at the periphery of the cluster of RF application elements, segregated from the plurality of rows and columns with a gap between the additional ground electrode and the cluster, and wherein a combined ground electrode surface area of the ground electrode and the at least one additional ground electrode is substantially greater than the combined application element surface area of the plurality of RF application elements.

4. The skin treatment device of claim 3, wherein the cluster of RF application elements are arranged between at least two ground electrodes.

5. The skin treatment device of claim 3, wherein the at least one additional ground electrode includes a plurality of additional ground electrodes arranged on the applicator tip in a manner at least partially surrounding the cluster of RF application elements.

6. The skin treatment device of claim 5, wherein a total of at least four ground electrodes are arranged about the cluster of RF application elements.

7. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are electrically connected to a first RF port.

8. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are arranged relative to the ground electrode in a manner to reduce competition between the RF electrodes.

9. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF application elements include at least 64 RF application elements.

10. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the ground electrode and the plurality of RF application elements are arranged on a common substrate.

11. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the circuit in which the RF application elements and the ground electrode are configured to be arranged includes an isolating transformer configured to reduce ground currents.

12. The skin treatment device of claim 11, wherein the circuit in which the RF application elements and the ground electrode are configured to be arranged further includes a capacitor serially connected between the isolating transformer and the plurality of RF application elements.

13. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the circuit in which the RF application elements and the ground electrode are configured to be arranged further includes an RF energy absorbing element configured to limit an amount of current flowing into skin.

14. The skin treatment device of claim 1, further including a connector for enabling removable attachment of the applicator tip to a source of the RF energy.

15. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of RF application elements includes a rounded distal end configured for contacting the epidermis of skin.

The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are arranged in a cluster of a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns, and the ground electrode is elongated and extends along at least a portion of a peripheral edge of the cluster, with a gap between the elongated ground electrode and the peripheral edge of the cluster.

17. The skin treatment device of claim 16, wherein the plurality of RF application elements and the ground electrode are arranged in a generally rectangular shape.

18. The skin treatment device of claim 1, wherein a diameter of each of the plurality of RF application elements is on an order of 250 μ

m and configured to cause both coagulation and ablation of the skin.

19. A skin treatment device, comprising:

an applicator tip;

a plurality of ground electrodes arranged on the applicator tip, the ground electrodes being configured for contacting epidermis of skin of a patient and being further configured for connection to a circuit for delivering RF energy to the skin; and

a plurality of RF application elements arranged in a cluster on the applicator tip between the plurality of ground electrodes, wherein the plurality of RF application elements are configured for connection to the circuit for delivering RF energy to the skin,

wherein the plurality of RF application elements in the cluster are free of any ground electrode therebetween.

20. The skin treatment device of claim 19, wherein the plurality of ground electrodes have a ground electrode surface area, and wherein the RF application elements have an application surface area substantially smaller than the ground electrode surface area.

21. The skin treatment device of claim 19, wherein the ground electrode is elongated and extends along at least a portion of a peripheral edge of the cluster of RF application elements, with a gap between the elongated ground electrode and the peripheral edge of the cluster.

22. The skin treatment device of claim 19, wherein the plurality of ground electrodes include four ground electrodes arranged on the applicator tip in a manner at least partially surrounding the cluster of RF application elements.

23. The skin treatment device of claim 19, wherein the plurality of ground electrodes and the RF application elements are arranged on the tip in a generally rectangular shape.

24. A skin treatment device, comprising:

a housing; and

at least one processor within the housing and configured to control RF energy supplied to an RF applicator tip having at least one ground electrode and a plurality of RF application elements arranged thereon, the plurality of RF application elements being arranged in a cluster and being free of any ground electrode therebetween, wherein the at least one ground electrode and the plurality of RF application elements are configured for contacting epidermis of skin and wherein a total surface area of the at least one ground electrode is greater than a combined surface area of the RF application elements.

25. The skin treatment device of claim 24, wherein the at least one ground electrode includes a plurality of elongated ground electrodes arranged on the applicator tip in a manner at least partially surrounding the RF application elements.

26. The skin treatment device of claim 25, wherein a total of at least four ground electrodes are arranged about the plurality of the RF application elements.

27. The skin treatment device of claim 24, wherein the plurality of RF application elements include at least 64 RF application elements.

28. The skin treatment device of claim 24, further comprising a circuit through which RF energy is delivered to the RF application elements, and wherein the circuit includes an isolating transformer configured to reduce ground currents.

29. The skin treatment device of claim 28, wherein the circuit includes a capacitor serially connected between the isolating transformer and the plurality of RF application elements.

30. The skin treatment device of claim 24, further comprising a circuit through which RF energy is delivered to the plurality of RF application elements, and wherein the circuit includes an RF energy absorbing element configured to limit an amount of current flowing into skin.
