Surgical tool system with quick release coupling assembly
First Claim
1. A cutting accessory for coupling to a powered surgical handpiece, said cutting accessory including:
- a drive hub, said drive hub being formed with at least one geometric feature for causing said drive hub to engage an output shaft of a motor integral with the handpiece;
a drive shaft that extends forward from said drive hub;
an outer hub, said outer hub being disposed over said drive hub and including;
an outer hub base dimensioned to be fitted in a complementary opening in the handpiece, said outer hub base having an inner wall provided adjacent an open proximal end in which said drive hub is seated; and
an outer hub head integral with and located forward of said outer hub base, said outer hub head being shaped to define a bore through which said drive shaft extends;
a seal formed from elastomeric material having a base section extending within the outer hub base and disposed against the inner wall of said outer hub base, said seal being shaped to define at least one rib that is axially spaced away from the open proximal end of said outer hub base that surrounds said drive hub; and
an outer housing that extends distally from said outer hub head and that at least partially surrounds said drive shaft.

Abstract
A surgical tool system with a handpiece and a cutting accessory that has inner and outer hubs. The handpiece has a spring biased lock ring that abuts a complementary stop member integral with the accessory outer hub to hold the accessory to the handpiece. An RFID chip is disposed against an inner wall of the accessory outer hub. An elastomeric seal pressed against the inner wall of the accessory outer hub provides environmental protection for the RFID chip. The seal has a rib that extends around the outer perimeter of the proximal end of the outer hub so as to form a seal between the accessory and an adjacent inner wall of the handpiece. Stop tabs extend inwardly from the seal to prevent the drive hub disposed inside the outer hub from falling out.

5. A cutting accessory comprising:
-
a drive hub, said drive hub having;
a drive hub neck with a diameter, said drive hub having a drive hub stem at a proximal end formed with a geometric feature for coupling said drive hub to a handpiece motor;and a drive hub head integral with and located at a distal end of said drive hub neck, said drive hub neck having a diameter, the diameter of said drive hub head being greater than the diameter of said drive hub neck; a drive shaft connected to said drive hub head that extends forward of said drive hub; an outer hub at least partially disposed about said drive hub, said outer hub including;
an outer hub base having an inner wall that defines a proximal end opening, said drive hub head and at least a portion of said drive hub neck being disposed in the proximal end opening; and
an outer hub head integral with and disposed adjacent said outer hub base, said outer hub head having a bore through which said drive shaft extends;at least two spaced apart stop members formed of material that yields upon application of pressure, that extend inwardly from the inner wall of said outer hub base, said at least two stop members collectively having inner surfaces that define an open section within the outer hub base proximal end opening that has a dimension greater than the diameter of said drive hub neck and less than the diameter of said drive hub head, said stop members being positioned in said outer hub base so that the open section defined by said stop members subtends a portion of said drive hub neck, wherein said stop members prevent the drive hub from separating from said outer hub; and an outer housing that extends forward from said outer hub head that at least partially surrounds said drive shaft. - View Dependent Claims (6)
