1. A method for operating a mobile communication device having a first wireless network interface configured for connection to a first network and a second wireless network interface configured for connection to a second network, the method comprising:

  • placing the first wireless network interface in a sleep mode of operation that has a reduced level of power consumption compared to an active mode of operation of the first wireless network interface wherein the mobile communication device is unable to receive data messages from the first network through the first wireless network interface in the sleep mode of operation and the mobile communication device is able to receive data messages from the first network through the first wireless network interface in the active mode of operation;

    generating a notification when an alerting message has been received by the second wireless network interface from the second network indicative of a request from an external computing system to change the mode of operation of the first wireless network interface to the active mode of operation; and

    ,waking the first wireless network interface in response to the generated notification by changing the mode of operation from the sleep mode of operation to the active mode of operation, thereby enabling the mobile communication device to receive data messages from the first network through the first wireless network interface.
