Abstract

Lighter-than-air systems, methods, and kits for obtaining aerial images are described. For example, various methods for determining planned ascent, drift, and/or descent of a lighter-than-air system are described. In addition, various structural arrangements of lighter-than-air systems for accomplishing planned ascent, drift, and/or descent and obtaining aerial images are described.

Claims

1. A lighter-than-air system comprising:

an airship comprising a first balloon and a second balloon, the first balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the first balloon comprising a wall defining a first balloon chamber, the second balloon disposed within the first balloon chamber, the second balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the second balloon comprising a wall defining a second balloon chamber; and

a thruster attached to the airship, the thruster comprising a thruster body and a container, the thruster body defining a cavity, a first passageway, and a second passageway, the container attached to the thruster body and comprising a wall defining a container chamber, wherein the cavity is in communication with the first balloon chamber, wherein the first passageway is in communication with the second balloon chamber, and wherein the second passageway is in communication with the container chamber.

The lighter-than-air system of claim 1, wherein the thruster further comprises a first valve in communication with the first passageway, the first valve configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the first valve holds fluid within the second balloon chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the first valve releases fluid held within the second balloon chamber.

The lighter-than-air system of claim 2, wherein the thruster further comprises a second valve in communication with the second passageway, the second valve configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the second valve holds material within the container chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the second valve releases material held within the container chamber.

4. The lighter-than-air system of claim 3, wherein the thruster further comprises a third valve in communication with the cavity, the third valve configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the third valve holds fluid within the first balloon chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the third valve releases fluid held within the first balloon chamber.

5. The lighter-than-air system of claim 1, further comprising an anchor attached to the thruster, the anchor having a total weight;

wherein the second balloon is adapted to contain a volume of fluid offsetting the total weight of the anchor.

6. The lighter-than-air system of claim 5, wherein the lighter-than-air system has a total weight;

and

wherein the first balloon is adapted to contain a volume of fluid offsetting the total weight of the lighter-than-air system less the total weight of the anchor.

7. The lighter-than-air system of claim 1, further comprising a frame attached to the thruster, wherein the frame comprises a first support member, a second support member, a third support member, and a ring member, wherein each of the first support member, the second support member, and the third support member has a first end attached to thruster, and a second end attached to the ring member;

and

wherein the lighter-than-air airship is disposed within the frame.

8. The lighter-than-air system of claim 7, wherein the first balloon defines an outer diameter in the inflated configuration;

and

wherein the ring member defines an outer diameter that is less than the outer diameter of the first balloon in the inflated configuration.

9. The lighter-than-air system of claim 1, further comprising an airfoil module attached to the thruster, the airfoil module comprising a base, first airfoil, and a second airfoil, the base comprising a first side and a second side, the first side opposably facing the second side, the first airfoil extending outward and away from the base from the first side, the second airfoil extending outward and away from the base from the second side.

10. The lighter-than-air system of claim 9, wherein the first airfoil and the second airfoil are fixedly attached to the base.

11. A lighter-than-air system comprising:

an airship comprising a first balloon and a second balloon, the first balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the first balloon comprising a wall defining a first balloon chamber, the second balloon disposed within the first balloon chamber, the second balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the second balloon comprising a wall defining a second balloon chamber; and

a thruster attached to the airship, the thruster comprising a thruster body, container, and a first valve, the thruster body defining a cavity, a first passageway, a second passageway, the container attached to the thruster body, the container comprising a wall defining a container chamber, the cavity in communication with the first balloon chamber, the first passageway in communication with the second balloon chamber, the second passageway in communication with the container chamber, the first valve in communication with the first passageway and configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the first valve holds fluid within the second balloon chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the first valve releases fluid held within the second balloon chamber.

12. The lighter-than-air system of claim 11, wherein the thruster further comprises a second valve in communication with the second passageway, the second valve configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the second valve holds material within the container chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the second valve releases material held within the container chamber.

13. The lighter-than-air system of claim 12, wherein the thruster further comprises a third valve in communication with the cavity, the third valve configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the third valve holds fluid within the first balloon chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the third valve releases fluid held within the first balloon chamber.

14. The lighter-than-air system of claim 11, further comprising an anchor attached to the thruster, the anchor having a total weight;

wherein the second balloon is adapted to contain a volume of fluid offsetting the total weight of the anchor.

15. The lighter-than-air system of claim 14, wherein the lighter-than-air system has a total weight;

and

wherein the first balloon is adapted to contain a volume of fluid offsetting the total weight of the lighter-than-air system less the total weight of the anchor.

16. The lighter-than-air system of claim 11, wherein the lighter-than-air system further comprises a frame attached to the thruster, the frame comprising a first support member, second support member, third support member, and a ring member, wherein each of the first support member, second support member, and third support member has a first end attached to thruster and a second end attached to ring member;

and

wherein the airship is disposed within the frame.

17. The lighter-than-air system of claim 16, wherein the first balloon defines an outer diameter in the inflated configuration;

and

wherein the ring member defines an outer diameter that is less than the outer diameter of the first balloon in the inflated configuration.

18. The lighter-than-air system of claim 11, further comprising an airfoil module attached to the thruster, the airfoil module comprising a base, first airfoil, and a second airfoil, the base comprising a first side and a second side, the first side opposably facing the second side, wherein the first airfoil extends outward and away from the base from the first side, and wherein the second airfoil extends outward and away from the base from the second side.

19. The lighter-than-air system of claim 18, wherein the first airfoil and second airfoil are fixedly attached to the base.

20. A lighter-than-air system comprising:

an airship comprising a first balloon and a second balloon, the first balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the first balloon comprising a wall defining a first balloon chamber, the second balloon disposed within the first balloon chamber, the second balloon movable between a deflated configuration and an inflated configuration, the second balloon comprising a wall defining a second balloon chamber; and

a thruster attached to the airship, the thruster comprising a thruster body, container, first valve, and a second valve, the thruster body defining a cavity, a first passageway, and a second passageway, the container attached to the thruster body, the container comprising a wall defining a container chamber, the cavity in communication with the first balloon chamber, the first passageway in communication with the second balloon chamber, the second passageway in communication with the container chamber, the first valve in communication with the first passageway and configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the first valve holds fluid within the second balloon chamber, wherein in the second configuration the first valve releases fluid held within the second balloon chamber, the second valve in communication with the second passageway and configured to have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein in the first configuration the second valve holds material within the container chamber, and wherein in the second configuration the second valve releases material held within the container chamber.
