Abstract

This invention relates generally to devices constructed from quasicrystalline heterostructures. In preferred embodiments, two or more dielectric materials are arranged in a two- or three-dimensional space in a lattice pattern having at least a five-fold symmetry axis and not a six-fold symmetry axis, such that the quasicrystalline heterostructure exhibits an energy band structure in the space, the band structure having corresponding symmetry, which symmetry is forbidden in crystals, and which band structure comprises a complete band gap. The constructed devices are adapted for manipulating, controlling, modulating, trapping, reflecting and otherwise directing waves including electromagnetic, sound, spin, and surface waves, for a pre-selected range of wavelengths propagating within or through the heterostructure in multiple directions.

Claims

1. A device comprising a quasicrystalline heterostructure, said heterostructure comprising a quasicrystalline arrangement of at least two dielectric materials in a two- or three-dimensional space, wherein said arrangement comprises a lattice pattern having at least a five-fold symmetry axis and not a six-fold symmetry axis, and wherein said quasicrystalline heterostructure exhibits a photonic band structure in said space, said band structure having corresponding symmetry, which symmetry is forbidden in crystals, and which band structure comprises a complete band gap.

2. The device according to claim 1, wherein said quasicrystalline heterostructure is configured such that said device can emit an electromagnetic radiation within a pre-selected range of frequencies propagating in multiple directions.

3. The device according to claim 2, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

The device according to claim 1, wherein said quasicrystalline heterostructure is configured such that at least a first band of frequencies in a spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation incident on said heterostructure creates an incident band that propagates within said heterostructure.

5. The device according to claim 4, wherein at least a portion of said incident band propagates through said heterostructure.

6. The device according to claim 4, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

7. The device according to claim 1, wherein said quasicrystalline heterostructure is configured such that at least a second band of frequencies in said incident spectrum reflects from said heterostructure to create a reflected band.

8. The device according to claim 7, wherein at least a portion of said reflected band is able to propagate within said heterostructure.

9. The device according to claim 8, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

10. The device according to claim 8, wherein at least a portion of said reflected band is able to propagate through said heterostructure.

11. The device according to claim 7, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

12. The device according to claim 1 wherein said quasicrystalline heterostructure is configured such that:

(a) at least a first band of frequencies in a spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation incident on said heterostructure creates an incident band, at least a portion of which propagates within said heterostructure, and

(b) at least a second band reflects from said heterostructure to create a reflected band.

13. The device according to claim 1, wherein said heterostructure comprises at least one structural defect in said band gap to create a localized state region within said heterostructure.

14. The device according to claim 13, wherein said localized state region is configured to confine within said heterostructure a predetermined band of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation incident on said heterostructure from substantially any direction to create an optical cavity.

15. The device according to claim 14, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

16. The device according to claim 13, comprising a plurality of said localized state regions wherein said regions are in optical communication to create an optical waveguide through which said radiation propagates in a predetermined direction.

17. The device according to claim 16, optically interconnected with one or more components of an optical circuit.

The device according to claim 13, wherein a sub-wavelength dielectric layer of said heterostructure is configured, and is disposed in relation to said optical cavity, such that said layer can reflect at least a portion of said confined radiation back and forth within said optical cavity to create a resonant optical cavity.

19. The device according to claim 18, wherein said resonant optical cavity, in operation, intensifies said confined radiation.

20. The device according to claim 19, wherein said incident radiation comprises a laser beam.

The device according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of said quasicrystalline dielectric heterostructures, each having a different bandgap, form an array of said heterostructures, wherein said array is configured such that pre-selected frequencies of radiation incident on said array or a portion thereof are transmissible therethrough over a broader range of frequencies than can be transmitted through any one of said heterostructures alone.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein said heterostructures in said array are attached together to form a photonic bandgap substrate whose bandwidth varies as a function of locations of said structures on the substrate.
