Abstract

An implantable medical device can include a Hall effect sensor. The Hall effect sensor can include a first pair of electrical contacts and a second pair of electrical contacts. In an example, the Hall effect sensor can be configured to sense a magnetic field and can be configured to provide a voltage corresponding to a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device, comprising:

a Hall effect sensor including a first pair of electrical contacts and a second pair of electrical contacts, the Hall effect sensor configured to sense a magnetic field and configured to provide a voltage corresponding to a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field;

a polling circuit electrically coupled to the Hall effect sensor and configured to provide an excitation signal to the Hall effect sensor; and

a processor electrically coupled to the Hall effect sensor, the processor configured to;

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts in response to a first excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts; and

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts in response to a second excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts.

2. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first and second pairs of electrical contacts comprise respective contacts located at or near respective corners of a surface of the Hall effect sensor.

The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first pair of electrical contacts comprises a first contact located at or near a first corner of a surface of the Hall effect sensor and a second contact located at or near a second corner of the surface of the Hall effect sensor diagonally opposite the first corner.

4. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the Hall effect sensor is rotationally symmetric about an axis.

5. The implantable medical device of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to select an operating mode of the implantable medical device in response to information indicative of the magnitude of the magnetic field sensed by the Hall effect sensor.

6. The implantable medical device of claim 1, comprising a shared integrated circuit including both the Hall effect sensor and the polling circuit.

7. The implantable medical device of claim 6, wherein the Hall effect sensor comprises:

a first well region having a first conductivity type; and

a second well region having a second conductivity type on or within the first well region;

wherein the first and second well regions are included on or within a substrate having the second conductivity type.

8. The implantable medical device of claim 7, wherein the Hall effect sensor comprises a reference contact located on or within the second well region.

9. The implantable medical device of claim 6, wherein the integrated circuit comprises a heterostructure;

and

wherein the Hall effect sensor comprises at least one layer of the heterostructure having a bandgap energy different from an adjoining layer.

10. The implantable medical device of claim 1, comprising a comparator configured to compare information indicative of the magnitude of the sensed magnetic field to a specified threshold;

wherein the polling circuit is coupled to the comparator and configured to;

provide an excitation signal at a first polling rate in response to information provided by the comparator indicative of a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field below the specified threshold; and

provide the excitation signal at a second, higher, polling rate in response to information provided by the comparator indicative of a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field above the specified threshold.

11. An implantable medical device, comprising:

a Hall effect sensor including a first pair of electrical contacts and a second pair of electrical contacts, the Hall effect sensor configured to sense a magnetic field and configured to provide a voltage corresponding to a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field, the first pair of electrical contacts comprises a first contact located at or near a first corner of a surface of the Hall effect sensor and a second contact located at or near a second corner of the surface of the Hall effect sensor opposite the first corner;

a polling circuit electrically coupled to the Hall effect sensor and configured to provide an excitation signal to the Hall effect sensor; and

a processor electrically coupled to the Hall effect sensor, the processor configured to;

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts in response to an excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts; and

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts in response to an excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts.

12. A method, comprising:

forming a Hall effect sensor including a first pair of electrical contacts and a second pair of electrical contacts, the Hall effect sensor configured to sense a magnetic field and configured to provide a voltage corresponding to a magnitude of the sensed magnetic field;

electrically coupling a polling circuit the Hall effect sensor, the polling circuit configured to provide an excitation signal to the Hall effect sensor;

electrically coupling a processor to the Hall effect sensor, the processor configured to;

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts in response to a first excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts; and

receive information indicative of the voltage provided by the Hall effect sensor via the first pair of electrical contacts in response to a second excitation signal provided from the polling circuit to the Hall effect sensor via the second pair of electrical contacts.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein forming the Hall effect sensor comprises forming the first and second pairs of electrical contacts including forming respective contacts located at or near respective corners of a surface of the Hall effect sensor.

The method of claim 12, wherein forming the Hall effect sensor comprises forming a first contact located at or near a first corner of a surface of the Hall effect sensor and forming a second contact located at or near a second corner of the surface of the Hall effect sensor diagonally opposite the first corner.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the Hall effect sensor is rotationally symmetric about an axis.

16. The method of claim 12, comprising forming a shared integrated circuit including both the Hall effect sensor and the polling circuit.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the forming the Hall effect sensor comprises:

forming a substrate having a second conductivity type;

on or within the substrate, forming a first well region having a first conductivity type; and

on or within the first well region, forming a second well region having a second conductivity type.

18. The method of claim 17, comprising forming a reference contact located on or within the second well region.

19. The method of claim 18, comprising conductively coupling the reference contact to a source configured to provide a specified reference potential.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the integrated circuit comprises a hetero structure;

and

wherein the method includes forming a Hall effect sensor comprising at least one layer of the heterostructure having a bandgap energy different from an adjoining layer.
