Abstract

A hearing aid includes a casing configured to fit behind an ear of a user'"'"'s head and against a side of the user'"'"'s head. The hearing aid further includes a first proximity sensor associated with the casing and configured to generate a first signal that is proportional to a proximity of the casing to the ear and includes a processor coupled to the first proximity sensor and configured to select an operating mode from a plurality of operating modes in response to the first signal.

Claims

1. A hearing aid comprising:

a casing configured to fit behind an ear of a user'"'"'s head;

a first proximity sensor associated with the casing and configured to generate a first signal that is proportional to a proximity of the casing to the ear; and

a processor coupled to the first proximity sensor and configured to select an operating mode from a plurality of operating modes in response to the first signal.

2. The hearing aid of claim 1, wherein the casing comprises:

a first portion defining a surface configured to fit against a side of the user'"'"'s head in a first position and to fit against at least a portion of an ear lobe of the ear in a second position; and

wherein at least a portion of the first proximity sensor is adjacent to the first portion.

3. The hearing aid of claim 2, wherein the casing further comprises:

a second portion defining a second curvature configured to fit against a back portion of the ear; and

a second proximity sensor associated with the second portion and coupled to the processor, the second proximity sensor configured to generate a second signal proportional to a second proximity of the second portion of the casing relative to the ear.

4. The hearing aid of claim 3, wherein the processor is responsive to the second signal to control an operating state of the hearing aid.

5. The hearing aid of claim 3, wherein the casing further comprises:

a third portion defining an opposing side of the casing relative to the first portion, the third portion configured to fit against the user'"'"'s head in the second position and to fit against a portion of the user'"'"'s ear lobe in the first position;

a third proximity sensor associated with third portion and coupled to the processor, the third proximity sensor configured to generate a third signal proportional to a third proximity of the casing relative to the user'"'"'s head; and

wherein the processor is responsive to the first signal, the second signal, and the third signal to select the operating mode.

6. The hearing aid of claim 5, further comprising:

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to store instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to shape audio signals to compensate for a hearing impairment of the user, the memory to store a plurality of hearing aid profiles defining settings for shaping the audio signals;

wherein the controller selects a right ear operating mode when the first signal exceeds a first threshold, the second signal exceeds a second threshold, and the third signal is less than a third threshold; and

wherein the processor loads a hearing aid profile from the plurality of hearing aid profiles to process audio signal for a right ear of the user in response to the selection of the right ear operating mode.

7. The hearing aid of claim 5, further comprising:

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to store instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to shape audio signals to compensate for a hearing impairment of the user, the memory to store a plurality of hearing aid profiles defining settings for shaping the audio signals;

wherein the controller selects a left ear operating mode when the third signal exceeds a third threshold, the second signal exceeds a second threshold, and the first signal is less than a first threshold; and

wherein the processor loads a hearing aid profile from the plurality of hearing aid profiles to process audio signal for a left ear of the user in response to the selection of the left ear operating mode.

8. The hearing aid of claim 1, further comprising:

an ear tube including a first end coupled to the casing and including a second end;

an ear bud coupled to the second end and configured to fit into an ear canal of the ear, the ear bud including a speaker coupled to circuitry within the casing and adapted to produce audible sound; and

a second proximity sensor associated with the ear bud and configured to generate a second signal proportional to a proximity of the ear bud relative to the ear canal.

9. The hearing aid of claim 8, further comprising:

a delay circuit coupled to the controller and to the second proximity sensor, the delay circuit configured to provide a delay signal to delay shaping of audio signals until the ear bud is positioned within the user'"'"'s ear; and

wherein the processor applies the operating mode to shape audio signals into modulated audio signals for reproduction by the speaker after a delay period has elapsed.

10. The hearing aid of claim 1, wherein the processor controls circuitry within the casing to enter a low power mode when the first signal is less than a first threshold.

11. The hearing aid of claim 5, wherein the first portion and the third portion of the casing are both configured to fit against the user'"'"'s head;

and

wherein the hearing aid can be worn by the user on either of the user'"'"'s ears.

12. A behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid comprising:

a casing having a substantially symmetrical shape relative to an axis, the casing having a first surface configured to fit a curvature of a back portion of an ear of a user'"'"'s head and a second shaped surface configured to fit against a side of the user'"'"'s head;

one or more sensors associated with the casing and configured to produce a respective one or more signals proportional to a proximity of the ear or the user'"'"'s head; and

a controller within the casing and coupled to the one or more sensors, the controller configured to control an operating state of the BTE hearing aid in response to at least one of the one or more signals.

13. The BTE hearing aid of claim 12, wherein at least one of the one or more sensors comprises a proximity sensor.

14. The BTE hearing aid of claim 12, further comprising:

a microphone for converting sounds into electrical signals;

a speaker for converting electrical signals into sounds;

a processor coupled to the controller, the microphone and the speaker, the processor to process the electrical signals to produce modulated signals for reproduction by the speaker; and

wherein the controller controls the operating state of the BTE hearing aid by activating the processor when the at least one signal exceeds a threshold.

15. The BTE hearing aid of claim 14, further comprising:

a delay circuit coupled to the controller to provide a delay signal to delay activation of at least some circuitry within the casing for a period of time after on the processor is activated.

16. The BTE hearing aid of claim 12, wherein the controller turns off the BTE hearing when the first signal falls below a threshold.

17. A method comprising:

detecting a first proximity of a hearing aid to an ear of a user'"'"'s head using a first proximity sensor associated with a casing of the hearing aid;

automatically activating a processor of the hearing aid in response to detecting the first proximity;

detecting a second proximity of the hearing aid to a side of the user'"'"'s head using a second proximity sensor associated with the casing; and

automatically selecting an operational mode of a plurality of operational modes of the hearing aid in response to detecting the second proximity.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising turning off the processor and other circuitry when the first proximity falls below a threshold.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the operational mode comprises an active listening mode.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

detecting a third proximity of the hearing aid relative to a telephone using a third sensor; and

selectively altering the operational mode from a listening mode to a telephone mode in response to detecting the third proximity.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein automatically selecting the operational mode comprises automatically selecting a right ear mode when the first proximity exceeds a first threshold, the second proximity exceeds a second threshold, and the third proximity is less than a third threshold.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein automatically selecting the operational mode comprises automatically selecting a left ear when the first proximity exceeds a first threshold, the second proximity is less than a second threshold, and the third proximity exceeds a third threshold.

23. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

waiting for a pre-determined period of time; and

applying the operational mode after the pre-determined period of time has elapsed.
