1. A method of power management for a mobile station in a multi-carrier wireless network, the method comprising:

  • establishing a primary connection between the mobile station and a base station by performing initial ranging to adjust power over a primary radio frequency (RF) carrier;

    performing open-loop power control and thereby obtaining long-term link measurement of the primary RF carrier;

    establishing a secondary connection between the mobile station and the base station by performing periodic ranging to adjust power over a secondary RF carrier, wherein the mobile station does not perform open-loop power control over the secondary RF carrier; and

    performing close-loop power control and thereby adjusting transmission power over an activated RF carrier only when the activated RF carrier conveys on-going data transmission.
