Abstract

There is provided a power system designed to enable electronic devices to be powered. The system includes a planar surface on which a device to be powered is placed. Within the power system and substantially parallel to the planar surface are multiple primary transformer windings formed in a multi-layer structure that couple energy inductively to a secondary winding formed in the device to be powered. A winding of a second layer is offset relative to a winding of a first layer.

Claims

1. A power system comprising:

a planar surface adapted to receive an electronic device to be powered;

a primary power circuit comprising a plurality of transformer windings formed in a multilayer structure comprising at least two layers, each of the transformer windings being substantially parallel to the planar surface, a first layer comprising a plurality of the transformer windings, a transformer winding of a second layer being offset relative to a transformer winding of the first layer; and

an electromagnetic shield on a side of the primary power circuit opposite from the planar surface.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the transformer windings of the first and second layers are offset from one another by a distance in a direction in a plane substantially parallel to the planar surface.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the transformer windings of the first and second layers are offset such that the transformer winding of the second layer at least partially overlaps both of the transformer windings of the first layer.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the offset of the winding of the second layer from a winding of the first layer is such that regions of the first layer that generate maximum magnetic flux coincide with regions of the second layer that generate minimum magnetic flux.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the transformer windings are formed in a shape comprising at least one from the group consisting of a square, a hexagon, a circle, a rectangle, and a polygon.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the magnetic flux generated by the transformer windings is substantially uniform over at least a majority of the planar surface.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the planar surface is divided into a plurality of regions, and each region is associated with a different group of one or more transformer windings.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the transformer windings are connected to each other in parallel.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the transformer windings are connected to each other in series.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein at least two of the transformer windings are connected to each other in parallel, and at least another two of the transformer windings are connected to each other in series.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the multilayer comprises at least three or more layers.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic shield comprises a sheet of ferrite material.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic shield comprises at least two sheets of conductive material.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein when a device is placed on the planar surface, energy is transferred to the device from only those transformer windings closely adjacent to the device.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the planar surface is large enough to allow two or more devices to be powered simultaneously.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the power system is adapted to power two or more devices simultaneously.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the planar surface is large enough to allow a device to be moved over the charging surface while being powered.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the power system is adapted to charge a battery of the received electronic device.
