1. An display apparatus having a plurality of pixel locations, said pixel locations comprising:
- two electrodes surrounding an electrically operable optically emissive or variably-transmissive material layer, wherein one of said electrodes is common among at least some of the pixels and is an electrically continuous sheet conductor and the other of said electrodes is selectively coupled to an observing circuit,(a) the observing circuit configured to electrically monitor, at a first pixel location that has been discharged, an aspect of an AC signal, the AC signal having a frequency above the optical response rate of a second pixel and being applied to the second pixel location and capacitively coupled to the first pixel location through an object exterior to the display and being monitored while(b) a portion of an image is displayed on the second pixel but not the first pixel, and(c) subsequent to electrically measuring an aspect of the applied AC component, refreshing the charge on the first pixel location to that necessary to display a desired luminosity by applying a DC voltage to the first pixel.

Abstract
A system and method are disclosed that determines the location of an object touching a display screen. The system and method modifies already existing display technology, including using the underlying structure of many types of existing displays as the touch detecting structure. The systems and methods are applicable to virtually all LCD and LCD-like displays, including emissive displays (OLED, PLED, quantum dot displays, etc.), electronic paper, and others.

9. A method of operating an display apparatus including a plurality of pixel locations and an observing circuit, wherein said pixel locations comprise two electrodes surrounding an electrically operable optically emissive or variably-transmissive material layer, wherein one of said electrodes is common among at least some of the pixels and is an electrically continuous sheet conductor, and wherein the other of said electrodes is selectively coupled to the observing circuit, comprising:
-
(a) electrically monitoring, using the observing circuit, at a first pixel location that has been discharged, an aspect of an AC signal, the AC signal having a frequency above the optical response rate of a second pixel and being applied to the second pixel location, wherein the second pixel is capacitively coupled to the first pixel location through an object exterior to the display; (b) displaying, while the observing circuit is electronically monitoring the aspect of the AC signal, a portion of an image on the second pixel but not the first pixel; and
,(c) refreshing, subsequent to electrically measuring an aspect of the applied AC component, the charge on the first pixel location to that necessary to display a desired luminosity by applying a DC voltage to the first pixel. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)
