1. A method comprising:
- a) receiving, by a wireless device, at least one radio resource control message from a base station, said at least one radio resource control message;
i) causing configuration of a plurality of carriers comprising a first carrier and a plurality of additional carriers in said wireless device; and
ii) comprising a carrier group index for a carrier in said plurality of carriers, said carrier group index identifying a carrier group, said carrier group being one of a plurality of carrier groups, said plurality of carrier groups comprising;
(1) a first carrier group comprising a first subset of said plurality of carriers, said first subset comprising said first carrier, uplink transmissions by said wireless device in said first carrier group employing a first synchronization signal received from said base station on said first carrier as a first timing reference; and
(2) a second carrier group comprising a second subset of said plurality of additional carriers;
b) transmitting first uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a first additional carrier as a timing reference carrier, said first additional carrier being an activated carrier in said second carrier group;
c) changing, autonomously by said wireless device, said timing reference carrier to a second activated additional carrier in said second carrier group in response to deactivation or release of said first additional carrier and when at least one additional carrier in said second carrier group is active;
d) transmitting second uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a second synchronization signal received from said base station on said second activated additional carrier as a second timing reference;
e) receiving, by said wireless device from said base station, at least one time alignment command, said time alignment command comprising;
i) a time adjustment value; and
ii) an index identifying said first carrier group or said second carrier group; and
f) applying, by said wireless device, said time adjustment value to third uplink signals transmitted on all activated uplink carriers in one of said first carrier group or said second carrier group identified by said index.

Abstract
A base station configures a first carrier group and a second carrier group in a wireless device. The wireless device transmits first uplink signals in the second carrier group employing a first additional carrier in the second carrier group as a timing reference carrier. The wireless device autonomously changes the timing reference carrier to a second additional carrier in the second carrier group. The second additional carrier is an active carrier different from the first additional carrier. The wireless device transmits second uplink signals in the second carrier group employing the second additional carrier as the timing reference carrier.

a) receiving, by a wireless device, at least one radio resource control message from a base station, said at least one radio resource control message; i) causing configuration of a plurality of carriers comprising a first carrier and a plurality of additional carriers in said wireless device; and ii) comprising a carrier group index for a carrier in said plurality of carriers, said carrier group index identifying a carrier group, said carrier group being one of a plurality of carrier groups, said plurality of carrier groups comprising; (1) a first carrier group comprising a first subset of said plurality of carriers, said first subset comprising said first carrier, uplink transmissions by said wireless device in said first carrier group employing a first synchronization signal received from said base station on said first carrier as a first timing reference; and (2) a second carrier group comprising a second subset of said plurality of additional carriers; b) transmitting first uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a first additional carrier as a timing reference carrier, said first additional carrier being an activated carrier in said second carrier group; c) changing, autonomously by said wireless device, said timing reference carrier to a second activated additional carrier in said second carrier group in response to deactivation or release of said first additional carrier and when at least one additional carrier in said second carrier group is active; d) transmitting second uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a second synchronization signal received from said base station on said second activated additional carrier as a second timing reference; e) receiving, by said wireless device from said base station, at least one time alignment command, said time alignment command comprising; i) a time adjustment value; and ii) an index identifying said first carrier group or said second carrier group; and f) applying, by said wireless device, said time adjustment value to third uplink signals transmitted on all activated uplink carriers in one of said first carrier group or said second carrier group identified by said index. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

a) receiving, by a wireless device, at least one radio resource control message from a base station, said at least one radio resource control message; i) causing configuration of a plurality of carriers comprising a first carrier and a plurality of additional carriers in said wireless device; and ii) comprising a carrier group index for a carrier in said plurality of carriers, said carrier group index identifying a carrier group, said carrier group being one of a plurality of carrier groups, said plurality of carrier groups comprising; (1) a first carrier group comprising a first subset of said plurality of carriers, said first subset comprising said first carrier, uplink transmissions by said wireless device in said first carrier group employing a first synchronization signal received from said base station on said first carrier as a first timing reference; and (2) a second carrier group comprising a second subset of said plurality of additional carriers; b) transmitting first uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a first additional carrier as a timing reference carrier, said first additional carrier being an activated carrier in said second carrier group; c) changing, autonomously by said wireless device, said timing reference carrier to a second activated additional carrier in said second carrier group in response to deactivation or release of said first additional carrier and when at least one additional carrier in said second carrier group is active; and d) transmitting second uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a second synchronization signal received from said base station on said second activated additional carrier as a second timing reference. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10)

11. A wireless device comprising:
-
a) one or more communication interfaces configured to communicate with a base station via at least one wireless link; b) one or more processors; and c) memory storing instructions that, when executed by said at least one or more processors, cause said wireless device to; i) receive at least one radio resource control message from said base station, said at least one radio resource control message; (1) causing configuration of a plurality of carriers comprising a first carrier and a plurality of secondary carriers; and (2) comprising a carrier group index for a secondary carrier in said plurality of secondary carriers, said carrier group index identifying a second carrier group, said second carrier group being one of a plurality of carrier groups, said second carrier group comprising a second subset of said plurality of secondary carriers; ii) receive, from said base station, a control command causing said wireless device to transmit a random access preamble on a secondary uplink carrier of said secondary carrier; iii) transmit said random access preamble on said secondary uplink carrier, transmission timing of said random access preamble being determined, at least in part, employing a first activated secondary carrier as a timing reference carrier, first uplink transmissions in said secondary carrier group employing said timing reference carrier; iv) change, autonomously by said wireless, said timing reference carrier to a second activated secondary carrier in said second carrier group in response to deactivation or release of said first additional carrier and when at least one additional carrier in said second carrier group is active; and v) transmit second uplink signals in said second carrier group, by said wireless device, employing a synchronization signal received from said base station on said second activated secondary carrier as a timing reference. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
