1. A wireless device, comprising;
- a reference frequency generator configured to generate a receiver reference frequency; and
a radio receiver configured to;
receive, using the receiver reference frequency, a data signal that was transmitted using a transmitter reference frequency; and
measure a signal quality of the data signal independent of a direct frequency measurement, the signal quality correlated to an offset between the transmitter reference frequency and the receiver reference frequency but not indicative of a direction of the offset,the reference frequency generator configured to determine from the measured signal quality that a previous adjustment to the receiver reference frequency in a first direction has worsened the signal quality, and responsive to that determination selectively vary a capacitance to adjust the receiver reference frequency in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

Abstract
An example wireless device includes a radio receiver to measure a signal quality of a data signal independent of a direct frequency measurement, the signal quality correlated to an offset between a transmitter reference frequency and a receiver reference frequency but not indicative of a direction of the offset. The example wireless device further includes a reference frequency generator to determine from the measured signal quality that a previous adjustment to the receiver reference frequency in a first direction has worsened the signal quality, and responsive to that determination adjust the receiver reference frequency in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.

10. A method of a tuning a radio, the method comprising:
-
measuring a bit error rate (BER) of a first data transmission between a transmitting device and a receiving device; using the measured BER of the first data transmission to estimate a first amount of frequency offset between the transmitting device and the receiving device; adjusting a reference frequency in a first direction based on the measured BER; measuring a BER of a second data transmission between the transmitting device and the receiving device; using the measured BER of the second data transmission to estimate a second amount of frequency offset between the transmitting device and the receiving device; and adjusting the reference frequency in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction responsive to the BER of the first data transmission being greater than the BER of the second data transmission. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A radio system, comprising:
-
a radio receiver configured to receive a radio transmission from a radio transmitter and to process the radio transmission using a reference frequency of the radio receiver; a trimming circuit configured to vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver; and a processing element configured to; calculate a first signal integrity of the radio transmission, infer, based on the first calculated signal integrity, a first frequency offset between the reference frequency of the radio transmitter and the reference frequency of the radio receiver, signal the trimming circuit to vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver based on the inferred first frequency offset, calculate a second signal integrity of the radio transmission after the trimming circuit has varied the reference frequency of the radio receiver, infer, based on a difference between the first calculated signal integrity and the second calculated signal integrity, a second frequency offset between the reference frequency of the radio transmitter and the varied reference frequency of the radio receiver, and signal the trimming circuit to further vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver based on the inferred second frequency offset. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19)
