1. A method of attaching a catheter to extracorporeal medical equipment, following placement of a catheter in the body of a patient through a venipuncture site, comprising:

  • providing a boot including a tapered outer wall having a diameter that decreases toward a distal end thereof and enclosing a longitudinally extending lumen;

    inserting a shaft of a dilator through the boot lumen;

    sliding the boot and dilator combination over a portion of a catheter extending from the venipuncture site until a distal end of the boot is positioned in the venipuncture site;

    removing the dilator from the boot;

    trimming a portion of the catheter extending from a proximal end of the boot; and

    attaching a bifurcation assembly to the proximal end of the boot.
