Abstract

Systems and methods for delivering bone cement into a bone can include a handle body defining a flow path, a thermal emitter in the handle body to apply energy to bone cement passing through the flow path, a source of bone cement and an injection cannula. The cannula can be in communication with the flow path such that inserting the cannula into a bone can allow a flow of bone cement therethrough to an opening at a distal end of the cannula. Other systems and methods for delivering bone cement into a bone can include an injector body with a handle portion, and a cannula, a bone cement container, a low pressure drive mechanism configured to effect a flow of bone cement from said container to the injector body and a high pressure drive mechanism configured to effect a flow of bone cement through the injector body into the bone.

Claims

1. A method for injecting bone cement into a bone, comprising:

mixing components of a bone cement to begin polymerization of the bone cement;

inserting at least a portion of an injector body into a bone, the injector body comprising a mechanical flow control mechanism configured to generate a flow rate signal of bone cement flowing through the injector body;

flowing bone cement through the injector body into the bone, comprising flowing bone cement into the injector body with a flow drive mechanism, the flow drive mechanism being separate from the mechanical flow control mechanism;

generating a flow rate signal with the mechanical flow control mechanism corresponding to the flow of bone cement through the injector body; and

modulating an application of thermal energy to the bone cement flowing through the injector body based at least in part on the flow rate signal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein flowing bone cement through the injector body comprises actuating the flow drive mechanism, the flow drive mechanism being coupled to the injector body.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein flowing bone cement through the injector body comprises hydraulically actuating a flow of bone cement with the flow drive mechanism.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein flowing bone cement comprises providing pulsed cement flow.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the bone cement flow ranges from about 0.1 cc/min to about 5 cc/min.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising modulating a flow rate of the bone cement in response, at least in part, to the generated flow rate signal.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising modulating at least one of a flow rate of the bone cement flow and energy application to the bone cement to maintain a substantially constant viscosity of the bone cement flow ejected from the injector body over a desired injection interval.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the injection interval is at least 1 minute.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the injection interval is at least 5 minutes.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the injection interval is at least 10 minutes.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein modulating the application of thermal energy comprises applying energy to the bone cement flow via a thermal energy emitter disposed in a handle portion of the injector body.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein modulating the application of thermal energy comprises applying a selected level of energy to the bone cement flow via a PTCR or NTCR material.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the mechanical flow control mechanism is downstream of the flow drive mechanism.

The method of claim 1, wherein the mechanical flow control mechanism is chosen from the group consisting of an impeller flowmeter, a gear flowmeter, a positive displacement flowmeter, an oval gear flowmeter, a sliding vane flowmeter, a notating disc flowmeter, an oscillating piston flowmeter, a helical screw flowmeter, a Pelton wheel flowmeter, a peristaltic pump, a reciprocating piston pump, a rotary vane pump, a diaphragm pump, a rotodynamic pump, and a positive displacement pump.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein generating a flow rate signal comprises generating a flow rate signal of the bone cement flow caused by the mechanical flow control mechanism.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the mechanical flow control mechanism comprises a pump.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing the bone cement flow to polymerize in a flow channel of the injector body downstream from an energy emitter.

18. A method for injecting bone cement into a bone, comprising:

mixing components of a bone cement to begin polymerization of the bone cement;

inserting at least a portion of an injector body into a bone, the injector body comprising a mechanical flow control mechanism configured to generate a flow rate signal of bone cement flowing through the injector body;

flowing bone cement from a bone cement source into the injector body with a flow drive mechanism;

flowing bone cement through the injector body into the bone with the mechanical flow control mechanism which is separate from the flow drive mechanism;

generating a flow rate signal with the mechanical flow control mechanism corresponding to the bone cement flow through the injector body caused by the mechanical flow control mechanism;

applying energy to the bone cement flow via an energy emitter disposed in the injector body; and

modulating the application of energy to the bone cement flowing through the injector body based at least in part on the flow rate signal.

The method of claim 18, further comprising modulating at least one of a flow rate of the bone cement flow and energy application to the bone cement to maintain a substantially constant viscosity of the bone cement flow ejected from the injector body into the bone over a desired injection interval.

The method of claim 18, wherein the mechanical flow control mechanism is chosen from the group consisting of an impeller flowmeter, a gear flowmeter, a positive displacement flowmeter, an oval gear flowmeter, a sliding vane flowmeter, a nutating disc flowmeter, an oscillating piston flowmeter, a helical screw flowmeter, a Pelton wheel flowmeter, a peristaltic pump, a reciprocating piston pump, a rotary vane pump, a diaphragm pump, a rotodynamic pump, and a positive displacement pump.

21. The method of claim 18, further comprising allowing the bone cement flow to polymerize in a flow channel of the injector body downstream from the energy emitter.
