Abstract

A system for serving an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the system being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer. The system may include a first physical channel transferring at least one packet between the layers, a second physical channel transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers, and a third physical channel transferring at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the at least one burst parameter and comprising the at least one packet, between the layers.

Claims

1. A system for use with an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the system being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer, the system comprising:

a physical channel for transferring at least one packet between the layers;

a physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers; and

a physical channel for transferring at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the burst parameter and comprising the packet, between the layers, wherein;

the physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter that transfers information characterizing a configuration of an individual burst while at least one packet of a burst previous to the individual burst is traversing the physical channel for transferring at least one packet, thereby shortening an inter-frame gap defined between the individual burst and the previous burst.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the timing signal comprises an indication, provided by the MAC layer to the PHY layer, of a time at which to transmit the burst.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the timing signal comprises an indication, provided by the MAC layer to the PHY layer, of a time at which to receive the burst.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one burst parameter is transferred, before the burst, from the MAC layer to the PHY layer.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the burst parameter comprises at least one reception configuration attribute of the burst.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein the at least one burst parameter comprises at least one transmission configuration attribute of the burst.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one burst parameter comprises at least one burst status parameter that is transferred after the burst, from the PHY layer to the MAC layer.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the second physical channel is operative to transfer, from the PHY layer to the MAC layer, an indication of the PHY layer'"'"'s extent of interest in different types of status parameters.

9. The system of claim 7 wherein the at least one status parameter transferred after the burst characterizes the burst and comprises at least one of the following:

SNR information; and

channel response information.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the second physical channel comprises a multi-standard pre-processor operative to pre-process, for transferal from layer to layer, at least one burst parameter formatted in accordance with any of a plurality of access mode-defining standards.

11. The system according to claim 1 further comprising at least one bit-loading table stored externally to the PHY layer.

The system according to claim 11 wherein the physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter is operative to transfer an individual bit-loading table, characterizing a pair of nodes including a Tx node and an Rx node, to a PHY layer of at least one of the Tx node and the Rx node when the nodes are preparing to communicate with one another.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter is operative to transfer at least one item of information regarding a burst, the item being different from:

(a) contents of packets included in the burst; and

(b) an indication of a time at which to transmit the burst.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the timing signal comprises an alert, provided by the PHY layer to the MAC layer, that a burst has been received by the PHY layer.

15. The system of claim 1 further comprising at least one gain-per-tone table stored externally to the PHY layer.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter is operative to transfer an individual gain-per-tone table, characterizing an individual Tx node, to the PHY layer of the Tx node.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the burst is transmitted from the individual node to another node.

18. A method for operating an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the method being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer, the method comprising:

transferring at least one packet between the layers over a first physical channel;

transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers over a second physical channel;

transmitting at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the at least one burst parameter and comprising the packet, between the layers over a third physical channel; and

using at least one digital key for accessing one bit-loading table that is stored in the MAC layer, the bit-loading table for storing a value associated with a number of bits to be loaded on a tone when the system transmits between at least one of a pair of nodes on the first physical channel or between at least one pair of nodes on the second physical channel.

19. A system servicing an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the system being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer, the system comprising:

a physical channel for transferring at least one packet between the layers;

a physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers; and

a physical channel for transferring at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the burst parameter and comprising the packet, between the layers, wherein;

at least one key for accessing one bit-loading table is stored in the MAC layer, the bit-loading table for storing a value associated with a number of bits to be loaded on a tone when the system transmits between at least one of a pair of nodes on the physical channel for transferring at least one packet and/or between a pair of nodes on the physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter.

20. A system servicing an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the system being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer, the system comprising:

a physical channel for transferring at least one packet between the layers;

a physical channel for transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers; and

a physical channel for transferring at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the burst parameter and comprising the packet, between the layers, wherein;

at least one gain-per-tone table is stored externally to the PHY layer, one key for accessing the one gain-per-tone table being stored in the MAC layer, the gain-per-tone table for defining the transmission power for each of a plurality of tones when the system transmits information between a pair of nodes, said transmission occurring over the physical channel for transferring at least one packet, the pair of nodes comprising a transmitting node and a receiving node.

21. A method for operating an individual node in a shared communication network having a MAC layer and a PHY layer, the method being operative to interface between the MAC layer and the PHY layer, the method comprising:

transferring at least one packet between the layers over a first physical channel;

transferring at least one burst parameter between the layers over a second physical channel;

transmitting at least one timing signal, for a burst characterized by the at least one burst parameter and comprising the packet, between the layers over a third physical channel;

storing, externally to the PHY layer, at least one bit-loading table; and

storing one key for accessing the one bit-loading table in the MAC layer, the bit-loading table for storing a number of bits to be loaded on a tone when the system transmits information over the first physical channel between a pair of nodes, the pair of nodes comprising a transmission node and a receiving node.
