Abstract

A theft prevention system for protecting portable electronic devices is disclosed. An acceleration sensor detects the acceleration of a portable electronic device, and a controller analyzes this acceleration to determine whether a theft condition is present. If so, an alarm can be initiated. The theft prevention system can include a filter for attenuating irrelevant acceleration frequencies and isolating those representative of theft, and comparison hardware/software for determining whether the detected acceleration matches a known acceleration profile characteristic of theft. Various parameters of the theft prevention system can also be set by a user through mechanisms such as a graphical user interface.

Claims

1. A method for providing theft protection for an electronic device by a theft protection sub-system, comprising:

operating the theft protection sub-system independently of a processor controlling the electronic device;

by the theft detection sub-system independent of the processor, detecting an acceleration of the electronic device;

generating a theft detection signal only when the acceleration is indicative of a known theft condition;

sending the theft detection signal to the processor, wherein the processor is arranged to enter a sleep mode to conserve electrical power consumption by the electronic device and the theft protection sub-system is operable when the processor is in the sleep mode and wherein generating the theft detection signal comprises generating the theft detection signal while the processor is in the sleep mode; and

prior to sending the theft detection signal to the processor, using the theft detection sub-system to generate and send a wake up signal to the processor.

2. The method defined in claim 1 further comprising:

disabling at least some operations of the electronic device when the theft protection sub-system generates the theft detection signal.

3. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the electronic device comprises a laptop computer.

4. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the electronic device comprises a portable device.

5. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.

6. The method defined in claim 1 further comprising:

generating an audible alarm using an audio output device in the electronic device in response to the theft detection signal.

7. The method defined in claim 1 further comprising:

displaying a visual alarm message using a display in the electronic device in response to the theft detection signal.

8. An electronic device comprising:

a processor operable to control the electronic device;

an accelerometer operable to generate acceleration signals indicative of movement of the electronic device;

a theft protection system configured to operate independently from the processor, wherein the theft protection system is operable to determine whether a theft condition is present based at least partly on the acceleration signals from the accelerometer, wherein the processor is operable to enter a sleep mode to conserve electrical power, wherein the theft protection system is operable even when the processor is in the sleep mode, wherein the theft protection system is operable to send a theft detection signal to the processor when the theft protection system determines that the theft condition is present, and wherein, when the theft protection system determines that the theft condition is present while the processor is in the sleep mode, the theft protection system is operable to send a wake up signal to the processor prior to sending the theft detection signal to the processor.

9. The electronic device defined in claim 8 wherein the theft protection system is operable to disable at least some operations of the electronic device when the theft protection system determines that the theft condition is present.

10. The electronic device defined in claim 8 wherein the electronic device comprises a laptop computer.

11. The electronic device defined in claim 8 wherein the electronic device comprises a portable device.

12. The electronic device defined in claim 8 wherein the electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.

13. An electronic device comprising:

a processor;

an accelerometer operable to generate acceleration signals indicative of movement of the electronic device;

a theft protection system, wherein the theft protection system is operable to determine whether a theft condition is present based at least partly on the acceleration signals from the accelerometer, wherein the processor is operable to enter a sleep mode to conserve electrical power, wherein the theft protection system is operable even when the processor is in the sleep mode, wherein the theft protection system is operable to send a theft detection signal to the processor when the theft protection system determines that the theft condition is present, and wherein the theft protection system is operable to detect the theft condition while the processor is in the sleep mode and operable to send a wake up signal to the processor prior to sending the theft detection signal to the processor.

14. The electronic device defined in claim 13 wherein the electronic device comprises a laptop computer.

15. The electronic device defined in claim 13 wherein the electronic device comprises a portable device.

16. The electronic device defined in claim 13 wherein the electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.
