A process, comprising bringing hydrogen chloride into contact with a scrubbing agent comprising a chlorohydrin to produce purified hydrogen chloride, and reacting a polyhydroxylated aliphatic hydrocarbon, an ester of a polyhydroxylated aliphatic hydrocarbon, or a mixture of the two with a chlorinating agent comprising said purified hydrogen chloride in order to obtain a chlorohydrin.
