1. A method for producing an audible sound that emanates from a speaker of a handheld electronic device the method comprising:
- detecting at least one preselected incremental rotation of a navigation tool of a handheld electronic device, the at least one preselected incremental rotation requesting a specific motion of the cursor on a display screen of the handheld electronic device;
determining, in response to the detecting, that the specific motion requested by the at least one preselected incremental rotation moves the cursor in a prohibited direction; and
generating, in response to the determining, a first sound from the speaker of the handheld electronic device indicating that the specific motion requested by the at least one preselected incremental rotation moves the cursor in a prohibited direction,the first sound being separate and distinct from at least a second sound that indicates movement of the cursor in an allowed direction.

Abstract
System and method that provides tactical feedback through a speaker of a handheld electronic device having a full alphabetic keyboard upon activation of a navigation tool. The audible feedback produced by the speaker is capable of being modified based on upon the location, speed, and other characteristics of the movement of a cursor on the display of a handheld electronic device. The sound produced by the speaker can originate from an audio file stored or otherwise available on the handheld electronic device.

8. An audible feedback system for a handheld electronic device comprising:
-
a speaker physically connected to a handheld electronic device; a navigation tool for controlling motion of a cursor about a display screen of the handheld electronic device; and a controller configured to control signals to be sent to the speaker, the controller being further configured to; detect at least one preselected incremental rotation of the navigation tool, the at least one preselected incremental rotation requesting a specific motion of the cursor on the display screen; determine, in response to the detection, that the specific motion requested by the at least one preselected incremental rotation moves the cursor in a prohibited direction; generate, in response to the determination, a first sound from the speaker indicating that the specific motion requested by the at least one preselected incremental rotation moves the cursor in a prohibited direction, the first sound being separate and distinct from at least a second sound that indicates movement of the cursor in an allowed direction; and disallowing the specific motion of the cursor on the display screen in response to determining that the specific motion requested by the at least one preselected incremental rotation moves the cursor in a prohibited direction. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)
