Abstract

A measurement system for capturing a transit time, phase, or frequency of energy waves propagating through a propagation medium is disclosed. The measurement system comprises a compressible waveguide (403), ultrasonic transducers (405, 406), and circuitry to sustain energy wave propagation in the waveguide (403). The circuitry includes a propagation tuned oscillator (404), a digital counter (409), a pulse generator (410), a phase detector (414), a counter (420), a digital timer (422), and a data register (424). The measurement system employs a continuous mode (CM), pulse mode, or pulse-echo mode of operation to evaluate propagation characteristics of continuous ultrasonic waves in the waveguide by way of closed-loop feedback to determine levels of applied forces on the waveguide.

Claims

1. A measurement system for the muscular-skeletal system comprising:

at least one ultrasonic transducer coupled to the muscular-skeletal system; and

circuitry configured to sustain continuous wave propagation in the muscular-skeletal system during a measurement sequence where the circuitry is configured to measure transit time, frequency, or phase of the energy waves.

2. The system of claim 1 where the circuitry is configured to provide closed-loop feedback during the measurement sequence.

3. The system of claim 2 where the circuitry is configured to provide a detection circuit in the closed-loop feedback path to detect propagated energy waves.

4. The system of claim 3 where the detection circuit is configured to couple to the at least one ultrasonic transducer and where the detection circuit is configured to trigger the at least one ultrasonic transducer to emit an energy wave into the waveguide upon detecting propagated energy waves.

5. The system of claim 1 where a first ultrasonic transducer is configured to couple to a first location of the muscular-skeletal system;

and

a second ultrasonic transducer configured to couple to a second location of the waveguide to generate a signal corresponding to propagated energy waves.

6. The system of claim 1 where the measurement sequence is configured to propagate a predetermined number of energy waves and measure an elapsed time.

7. The system of claim 1 where the transit time, frequency, or phase of the energy waves corresponds to bone density.

8. A measurement system for the muscular-skeletal system comprising:

at least one ultrasonic transducer configured to couple to the muscular-skeletal system; and

circuitry configured to sustain pulsed wave propagation in the muscular-skeletal system during a measurement sequence where an integer number of pulsed energy waves is maintained in the muscular-skeletal system and where the circuitry is configured to measure transit time, frequency, or phase of the pulsed energy waves.

9. The system of claim 8 where the circuitry is configured to provide closed-loop feedback during the measurement sequence.

10. The system of claim 9 where the circuitry includes a detection circuit in the closed-loop feedback path configured to detect propagated pulsed energy waves and where the detection circuit triggers the at least one ultrasonic transducer to emit a pulsed energy wave into the muscular-skeletal system upon detecting a propagated pulsed energy wave.

11. The system of claim 8 further including:

a first transducer coupled to a first location of the muscular-skeletal system to emit pulsed energy waves; and

a second transducer coupled to a second location of the waveguide to generate a signal corresponding to propagated pulsed energy waves.

12. The system of claim 8 where the measurement sequence is configured to propagate a predetermined number of pulsed energy waves and measure an elapsed time of the measurement sequence.

13. The system of claim 8 where the circuitry includes a detection circuit in the closed-loop feedback path to detect reflected pulsed energy waves.

14. A bone density measurement system comprising:

at least one ultrasonic transducer coupled to the muscular-skeletal system; and

circuitry configured to sustain pulsed energy wave propagation in the muscular-skeletal system during a measurement sequence where the circuitry is configured to measure transit time, frequency, or phase of the pulsed energy waves.

15. A system of claim 14 where the transit time, frequency, or phase of the pulsed energy waves corresponds to a bone density measurement.

16. The system of claim 14 where the circuitry is configured to provide closed-loop feedback during the measurement sequence.

17. The system of claim 16 where a detection circuit is configured to trigger the at least one ultrasonic transducer to emit a pulsed energy wave into the muscular-skeletal system upon detecting a pulsed energy wave.

18. The system of claim 17 where the measurement sequence is configured to output a predetermined number of pulsed energy waves into the muscular-skeletal system and measure an elapsed time.

19. The system of claim 18 where the electronic circuitry is configured to maintain an integer number of pulsed energy waves in the muscular-skeletal system.

20. The system of claim 19 further including:

a counter;

a counter register coupled to the counter;

a timer coupled to the counter register; and

a data register coupled to the timer.
