Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention relates to an implantable medical device (“IMD”) that can be programmed from one operational mode to another operational mode when in the presence of electro-magnetic interference (“EMI”). In accordance with this particular embodiment, the IMD includes a communication interface for receiving communication signals from an external device, such as a command to switch the IMD from a first operation mode to a second operation mode. The IMD further includes a processor in electrical communication with the communication interface, which is operable to switch or reprogram the IMD from the first operation mode to the second operation mode upon receiving a command to do so. In addition, the IMD includes a timer operable to measure a time period from when the processor switches the IMD to the second operation mode. In accordance with this aspect of the invention, the processor is in electrical communication with the timer, and is further operable to switch the IMD from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode when the measured time period reaches a predetermined time period.

Claims

1. A method for operating an implantable medical device (IMD) in the presence of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the IMD including a sensor operable to sense MRI electromagnetic fields, the method comprising:

programming the IMD with an external device from a non-MRI mode, in which the sensor is inactive, to an MRI mode, in which the sensor is active, outside the presence of the MRI system; and

switching the IMD from a first operation mode to a second operation mode when the sensor detects an MRI electromagnetic field.

2. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:

measuring a time period from when the IMD is switched to the second operation mode; and

switching the IMD from the second operation mode to the first operation mode when the measured time period reaches a predetermined time period.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the predetermined time period is extended if the sensor detects an MRI electromagnetic field at the end of the predetermined time period.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the IMD is a cardiac pacing device, and wherein the first operation mode is a non-fixed-rate pacing mode, and the second operation mode is a fixed-rate pacing mode.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the IMD is a cardiac pacing device, and wherein the first operation mode is a demand pacing mode, and the second operation mode is a non-demand or asynchronous pacing mode.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the IMD is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and wherein the first operation mode is a mode in which tachy therapy is enabled, and the second operation mode is a mode in which tachy therapy is disabled.

7. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:

detecting the absence of the MRI electromagnetic fields;

upon detecting the absence of the one or more MRI electromagnetic fields, switching the IMD from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode.

8. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:

programming the IMD from the MRI mode to the non-MRI mode, wherein in the non-MRI mode the IMD is prohibited from switching from the first operation mode to the second operation mode.

9. A method for operating an implantable medical device (IMD) in the presence of electromagnetic interference (EMI), the IMD including a sensor operable to sense EMI, the method comprising:

programming the IMD with an external device from a non-MRI mode, in which the sensor is inactive, to an MRI mode, in which the sensor is active, outside the presence of the EMI;

detecting the presence of EMI;

switching the IMD from a first operation mode to a second operation mode upon detecting the presence of EMI;

measuring a time period from when the IMD is switched from the first operation mode to the second operation mode; and

switching the IMD from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode when the measured time period reaches a predetermined time period, wherein the predetermined time period is set so that the IMD is switched from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode after the IMD is positioned a safe distance from the EMI.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the IMD is a cardiac pacing device, and wherein the first operation mode is a non-fixed-rate pacing mode, and the second operation mode is a fixed-rate pacing mode.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the IMD is a cardiac pacing device, and wherein the first operation mode is a demand pacing mode, and the second operation mode is a non-demand or asynchronous pacing mode.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the IMD is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and wherein the first operation mode is a mode in which tachy therapy is enabled, and the second operation mode is a mode in which tachy therapy is disabled.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the EMI comprises electromagnetic signals from a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, and wherein the step of switching the IMD from the first operation mode to the second operation mode is performed prior to a patient receiving an MRI scan, and wherein the predetermined time period is set so that the step of switching the IMD from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode is performed after the MRI scan is complete.

14. A method for operating an implantable medical device (IMD) in the presence of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the IMD including a sensor operable to sense electromagnetic fields, the method comprising:

programming the IMD with an external device from a non-MRI mode, in which the sensor is inactive, to an MRI mode, in which the sensor is active, outside the presence of the MRI system;

measuring a level of one or more electromagnetic field components generated by the MRI system;

switching the IMD from a first operation mode to a second operation mode if the level of the one or more electromagnetic field components exceeds a predetermined level threshold;

measuring the level of the one or more electromagnetic field components while the IMD is in the second operation mode; and

switching the IMD from the second operation mode to the first operation mode if the level of the one or more electromagnetic field components fall below the predetermined level threshold.

15. The method of claim 14, and further comprising:

starting a timer after the IMD is switched from the first operation mode to the second operation mode;

switching the IMD from the second operation mode back to the first operation mode after the time period measured by the timer reaches a predetermined time period.

16. The method of claim 15, and further comprising:

extending the predetermined time period if the level of the one or more electromagnetic field components exceed the predetermined level threshold at the end of the predetermined time period.

17. The method of claim 14, and further comprising:

programming the IMD from the MRI mode to the non-MRI mode, wherein in the non-MRI mode the IMD is prohibited from switching from the first operation mode to the second operation mode.

The method of claim 14, wherein measuring the level of the one or more electromagnetic field components comprises at least one of measuring a strength of a static magnetic field, measuring an amplitude of a radio frequency (RF) signal at a predetermined frequency, and measuring a strength of a static magnetic field and the amplitude of a RF signal at a predetermined frequency

19. The method of claim 18, wherein measuring the amplitude of the RF signal comprises using a bandpass filter to select the RF signal at the predetermined frequency.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the predetermined frequency is about 64 MHz.
