1. A method of controlling a hybrid vehicle comprising:
- in response to receiving a user assigned mode for a segment of a trip route from a user interface, generating a charge reference profile of a battery coupled to an electric motor based on the trip for another segment of the trip route;
commanding the electric motor and an engine based on a location of the vehicle with respect to the trip route; and
commanding the electric motor and the engine to operate in a limited charge depletion mode to a target state of charge of the battery such that a state of charge of the battery follows the reference profile based on the location of the vehicle being in the another segment.

partitioning a selected trip route into segments; assigning an operational mode to each segment thereby creating a distance mode-map, wherein one segment is a limited charge depletion (LCD) mode; and commanding first and second propulsion devices to operate in the LCD mode to a target battery state of charge such that a battery state of charge follows a reference profile when the vehicle is in the one segment. - View Dependent Claims (12)

13. A vehicle comprising:

an electric motor; a battery coupled to the electric motor; an engine, wherein the electric motor and the engine are coupled to wheels of the vehicle via a transmission; a user interface configured for a user to select a trip route for the vehicle; and an electronic control unit (ECU) coupled to the user interface, the electric motor, the battery, and the engine, wherein the ECU is configured to (i) in response to receiving a user assigned mode of operation for a segment of the trip route, generate a charge reference profile for another segment of the trip route that incorporates a battery charge usage set by the segment and a target battery state of charge at an end of the trip route, (ii) command the electric motor and the engine to the user assigned mode of operation in the segment, (iii) command the electric motor and the engine to operate in a limited charge depletion mode such that a state of charge (SOC) of the battery tracks the reference profile when the vehicle is located in the another segment. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17)
