1. A position detection system for use in association with computing applications, the system comprising:

  • a positional element for attaining a position and comprising a first emitter for emitting a continuous ultrasonic waveform as a carrier wave, said continuous waveform having continuous waveform properties and said positional element modulating said continuous ultrasonic waveform with a signal comprising positional information, thereby to provide a carrier wave with said signal modulated thereon, said continuous ultrasonic waveform being decodable to extract said signal and said positional information, therewith to fix said attained position, anda detector arrangement for detecting said continuous ultrasonic waveform comprising said signal modulated thereon, said detecting being in a manner permitting fixing of said attained position, said detector arrangement further outputting said waveform for computation, in a manner retentive of said positional information in said signal modulated thereon wherein the system further comprises a decoding unit for carrying out said computation to decode said waveform and indicate said position, said decoding unit comprising a maximum likelihood detector for carrying out said decoding by finding a most likely distance, and wherein said maximum likelihood detector comprises a channel model for modeling passage of said waveform from said positional element to said waveform decoding unit, the channel model providing a modeled reference signal against which to identify said most likely distance.
