Abstract

The invention provides a system of generation of multi-channel analog output signals, from a single analog input signal, and the controlled activation of peripheral devices responsive to the multi-channel analog output signals. A single-channel to multi-channel analog-to-analog converter is provided to convert the single analog input signal to multiple output channels. Uni-directional coupling is used for coupling and mixing the multi-channel outputs and transferring the mixed outputs to a data bus. Signals on the data bus are used to drive the multiple peripheral devices.

Claims

1. A method for controlling light sources, the method comprising:

providing an analog input signal at an analog input of a control circuit;

operating the control circuit to provide analog output signals at each of a plurality of analog outputs according to mappings embodied in the control circuit, the mappings relating values of the analog input signal to corresponding values of the analog output signals; and

applying the plurality of analog output signals to drive a corresponding plurality of light sources;

wherein, for each of the analog output signals, the mapping is such that changing the value of the analog input signal within a range causes the analog output signal to vary according to a profile determined by the mapping.

2. A method according to claim 1 comprising applying a first one of the output signals to drive a light source of a first type and applying a second one of the output signals to drive a light source of a second type different from the first type.

3. A method according to claim 2 comprising applying a third one of the output signals to drive a light source of a third type wherein the first, second and third types are different.

A method according to claim 2 wherein the light sources of the first and second types are respectively operable to emit light of a first color and a second color different from the first color and the method comprises varying the input signal to change relative intensities of the first and second light sources.

A method according to claim 2 comprising driving at least one red-light-emitting light source with a first one of the output signals, driving at least one green-light-emitting light source with a second one of the output signals, driving at least one blue-light-emitting light source with a third one of the output signals and driving at least one additional light source with a fourth output signal produced by the control circuit in response to the input signal.

6. A method according to claim 1 comprising applying each of a plurality of the analog output signals to drive a respective one of a plurality of light sources, different ones of the light sources operable to emit light of different colors, and varying the input signal to provide color mixing.

A method according to claim 1 comprising applying each of a plurality of the analog output signals to drive a respective one of a plurality of light sources, different ones of the light sources operable to emit light having different spectral characteristics, allowing light from the different ones of the light sources to mix and varying the input signal to change the spectral makeup of the mixed light.

A method according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of output signals comprises at least first, second and third analog output signals and the method comprises applying the first analog output signal to drive a source of red light, applying the second analog output signal to drive a source of green light and applying the third analog output signal to drive a source of blue light.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the input signal represents a characteristic of ambient light.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the input signal represents brightness of the ambient light.

11. A method according to claim 1 comprising accumulating an accumulated value and applying a signal representing the accumulated value as the input signal.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the input signal comprises an externally adjustable electric voltage or current.

13. A method according to claim 12 wherein the input signal comprises a user adjustable electric voltage or current.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the input signal comprises a composition of signals represented in a cumulated analog form.

15. A method according to claim 1 wherein the input signal comprises a stepped analog signal.

16. A method according to claim 1 comprising generating the analog input signal at a photoelectric monitor.

17. A method according to claim 1 comprising receiving the analog input signal from a power supply wire and powering the control circuit with electrical power supplied by way of the power supply wire.

18. A method according to claim 1 wherein one or more of the profiles comprises a ramp region wherein an increase in the value of the analog input signal provides a corresponding increase in the value of the corresponding analog output signal and a peak region wherein the value of the corresponding analog output signal remains generally constant as the analog input signal changes.

19. A method according to claim 1 wherein one or more of the profiles comprises a decay region wherein an increase in the value of the analog input signal provides a corresponding decrease in the value of the corresponding analog output signal.

20. A method according to claim 1 wherein each of the profiles has at least one energized portion wherein the value of the corresponding output signal is non-zero and wherein the energized portions of at least two of the profiles overlap.

21. A method according to claim 1 comprising applying at least one of the analog output signals to an input of an analog to digital converter.

A method according to claim 1 comprising partitioning an input range of the input signal into a plurality of sub-ranges and wherein the sub-ranges each correspond to one of the outputs and, for each of the outputs, controlling the corresponding output signal to be off when the input signal has a value outside of all sub-ranges corresponding to the output.

23. A method according to claim 22 wherein a plurality of non-overlapping ones of the sub-ranges correspond to one of the outputs.

24. A method according to claim 22 wherein neighboring ones of the sub-ranges overlap.

25. A method according to claim 22 wherein at least two of the sub-ranges completely overlap to provide simultaneous turning on of a plurality of the output signals in response to an increase in the input signal into the at least two of the sub-ranges.

26. A method according to claim 1 wherein one or more of the mappings comprises a non-linear mapping.

27. A method according to claim 26 wherein one or more of the mappings specifies a non-linear increase in the corresponding output signal in response to an increase in the input signal over a sub-range of the input signal.

28. A method according to claim 26 wherein one or more of the mappings specifies a non-linear decrease in the corresponding output signal in response to an increase in the input signal over a sub-range of the input signal.

29. A method according to claim 1 wherein each of the profiles has at least one energized portion wherein the value of the corresponding output signal is non-zero and the energized portions of different ones of the profiles correspond to different sub-ranges of values of the analog input signal.

30. A method according to claim 29 wherein at least one of the profiles comprises a plurality of distinct energized portions.

31. A method according to claim 29 wherein two or more of the sub-ranges overlap.

32. A method according to claim 1 wherein, for at least some values of the analog input signal, all of the analog output signals are off.

33. A method according to claim 1 comprising supplying at least one of the analog output signals as an input to an analog-to-digital converter.

34. A method according to claim 1 comprising changing the value of the analog input signal and thereby causing changes in the relative amounts of light emitted by the plurality of light sources.
