Digital signature collection and authentication
First Claim
1. A digital signature collection system comprising:
- a writing implement with first and second ends, wherein the writing implement comprises a tip located at the first end of the writing implement, and wherein the tip is operable to create a signature on a writing surface, the signature having a shape;
a pressure sensor to sense the amount of pressure applied by the tip at different times during creation of the signature;
an analog-to-digital converter (A/D) to receive, from the pressure sensor, an analog signal having an amplitude that is proportional to the pressure applied by the tip of the writing implement, and to digitize the analog signal;
a transmitter to transmit an electromagnetic signal from the writing implement, wherein the electromagnetic signal provides pressure information based on the digitized signal from the A/D convertor;
at least one position signal receiver to receive information pertaining to positioning of the tip at different times during creation of the signature; and
control logic to generate a digital representation of the signature suitable for comparison with a pre-approved digital signature, wherein the control logic generates the digital representation of the signature based at least in part on information from the pressure sensor and information from the position signal receiver, and wherein the digital representation of the signature comprises;
shape data pertaining to the shape of the signature; and
pressure data based on the pressure information from the transmitter.

Abstract
A digital signature collection and authentication system includes an ink pen having an ultrasonic transmitter that transmits ultrasonic energy to a plurality of ultrasonic receivers. A computer triangulates the location of the pen versus time to generate the signature shape, and to generate velocity and acceleration data. The pen also includes a pressure sensitive tip to record pressure applied to the pen tip. The pen also includes a higher frequency burst transmitter useful to generate a time reference, and to transmit the pressure information. The computer packetizes the shape, velocity, acceleration, and pressure data with a time stamp and an IP address or phone number, encrypts the packet and sends it to a host computer for authentication.
