1. A system, comprising:

  • an internal combustion engine producing an exhaust gas stream;

    an aftertreatment component structured to treat the exhaust gas stream, the aftertreatment component requiring intermittent thermal regeneration events;

    an electric component operatively coupled to an output shaft of the internal combustion engine;

    a controller structured to;

    determine a regeneration state of the aftertreatment component and determine an engine operation parameter, wherein the engine operating parameter comprises one of a temperature of the exhaust gas stream and a nominal temperature of the exhaust gas stream, and wherein the controller is further structured to provide the engine loading command in response to the one of the temperature and the nominal temperature of the exhaust gas stream being lower than a threshold temperature value;

    provide an engine loading command in response to the engine operation parameter and further in response to the regeneration state indicating an active thermal regeneration event; and

    wherein the electric component is structured to provide oppositional torque to the output shaft in response to the engine loading command.
