Abstract

A fiber optic splice housing and integral dry mate connector system. In a described embodiment, a fiber optic connection system includes optical fiber sections in respective conduit sections. Each of the conduit sections is received in the housing assembly. An optical connection between the optical fiber sections is positioned within the housing assembly.

Claims

1. A method of optically connecting first and second optical fiber sections to each other, the method comprising the steps of:

positioning each of the first and second optical fiber sections within a respective one of first and second conduit sections;

optically connecting the first and second optical fiber sections to each other using an optical connection; and

containing the connection within a housing assembly, thereby isolating the optical connection from pressure external to the housing assembly.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of securing the housing assembly to at least one of the first and second conduit sections.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of securing the housing assembly to each of the first and second conduit sections.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of receiving at least one of the first and second conduit sections within the housing assembly.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of receiving each of the first and second conduit sections within the housing assembly.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the containing step further comprises reciprocably displacing the housing assembly over at least one of the first and second conduit sections.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the containing step further comprises reciprocably displacing the housing assembly over each of the first and second conduit sections.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the connecting step further comprises forming the connection by fusion splicing the first and second optical fiber sections to each other.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the connecting step further comprises forming the connection by connecting first and second fiber optic connectors to each other, each of the first and second fiber optic connectors being attached to a respective one of the first and second optical fiber sections.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the connecting step further comprises gripping each of the first and second conduit sections, thereby spacing apart the first and second conduit sections a selected distance apart from each other, and then forming the connection between the first and second optical fiber sections.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the connecting step further comprises increasing the distance between the first and second conduit sections after the forming step.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the connecting step further comprises reciprocably receiving the first conduit section within the housing assembly prior to the forming step.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the connecting step further comprises securing the housing assembly to each of the first and second conduit sections after the forming step.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the connecting step further comprises receiving the connection within the housing assembly after the forming step.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the forming step further comprises receiving the first and second optical fiber sections in a fusion splicer.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the receiving step is performed after the gripping step.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein in the receiving step, the fusion splicer is positioned between first and second gripping devices, each of the first and second gripping devices gripping a respective one of the first and second conduit sections.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the receiving step further comprises displacing the fusion splicer relative to the first and second gripping devices.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the containing step further comprises receiving a substantial length of at least the second optical fiber section in a recess formed on a generally tubular body of an optical fiber storage apparatus.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the receiving step further comprises wrapping the second optical fiber section multiple times in the recess.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the receiving step further comprises receiving the connection in the recess.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the containing step further comprises receiving a third optical fiber section in the optical fiber storage apparatus.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the third optical fiber section receiving step further comprises receiving a temperature sensing element in the optical fiber storage apparatus.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein in the temperature sensing element receiving step, the temperature sensing element is a fiber Bragg grating formed on the third optical fiber section.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein in the temperature sensing element receiving step, the temperature sensing element is an interferometric temperature sensing element.

26. The method of claim 22, wherein in the first, second and third optical fiber section receiving steps, the third optical fiber section comprises a single mode optical fiber, and each of the first and second optical fiber sections comprises a multi-mode optical fiber.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the housing assembly has opposite ends, and wherein in the containing step, an internal dimension of the housing assembly between the opposite ends is greater than an internal dimension at one of the opposite ends.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the housing assembly has opposite ends, and wherein in the containing step, an internal dimension of the housing assembly between the opposite ends is greater than an internal dimension at each of the opposite ends.

29. A method of optically connecting first and second optical fiber sections to each other, the method comprising the steps of:

positioning each of the first and second optical fiber sections within a respective one of first and second conduit sections;

optically connecting the first and second optical fiber sections to each other using an optical connection; and

containing the connection within a housing assembly, wherein the containing step further comprises receiving substantial lengths of each of the first and second optical fiber sections in first and second recesses formed on a generally tubular body of an optical fiber storage apparatus.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the receiving step further comprises wrapping at least the first optical fiber section multiple times in the first recess, and wrapping at least the second optical fiber section multiple times in the second recess.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the receiving step further comprises receiving one of the first and second optical fiber sections in a third recess interconnecting the first and second recesses.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein the receiving step further comprises simultaneously winding the first and second optical fiber sections about the body.
