Abstract

An implantable hearing unit is provided that includes an implantable microphone, a rechargeable power storage device and a speech signal processor. The hearing unit further includes a signal coupling device that is adapted for electrical interconnection to an implantable auditory stimulation device, which is operative to stimulate an auditory component of a patient. Such a stimulation device may include cochlear implants, brain stem stimulation systems, auditory nerve stimulation systems, and middle or inner ear transducer systems. The signal coupling device is operative to provide processed drive signals from the signal processor to the stimulation device as well provide power from the power storage device to operate the stimulation device. In one arrangement, the signal coupling device is a wireless coupling between first and second coils. In such an arrangement, the hearing unit may be utilized with an existing implanted stimulation device to make that device a fully implanted hearing system.

Claims

1. A method for use with an implantable auditory stimulation system, comprising:

generating a first drive signal at a first supercutaneous unit, the first drive signal being based on a first captured sound signal;

transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting said first drive signal from said first supercutaneous unit to a second subcutaneous implant module of the implantable auditory stimulation system;

actuating a subcutaneously implanted stimulation device in communication with the second subcutaneous implant module to evoke a hearing percept based on the transmitted first drive signal;

generating a second drive signal at a first subcutaneous implant module;

wirelessly transmitting said second drive signal from said first subcutaneous implant module to the second subcutaneous implant module;

transcutaneously receiving, at said first implant module, at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals; and

utilizing said at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals to recharge a power supply associated with said first implant module, wherein

transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting said first drive signal from the first supercutaneous unit to the second subcutaneous implant module is executed without said first subcutaneous implant module being implanted in a recipient of the implantable auditory stimulation system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

actuating said subcutaneously implanted stimulation device according to said second drive signal.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein generating said second drive signal further comprises:

receiving vibration resulting from a second sound signal at a subcutaneous microphone;

producing a microphone output associated with said vibration; and

processing said microphone output to generate said second drive signal.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein wirelessly transmitting said second drive signal further comprises:

creating an inductive coupling between said first module and said second module.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

wirelessly transmitting power from the power supply associated with said first implant module to said second implant module, wherein said power is sufficient to run said second module and the stimulation device.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said power and said second drive signal are transmitted over a common wireless link between said first and second implant modules.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein wirelessly transmitting power comprises continuously transmitting said power for at least 8 hours.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein wirelessly transmitting power comprises continuously transmitting said power for at least 12 hours.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein wirelessly transmitting power comprises continuously transmitting said power for at least 16 hours.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein generating said drive signals comprises generating a signal operative for use with an intracochlear electrode.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein generating said drive signals comprises generating a signal operative for use with a middle ear stimulation device.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

implanting, at a subcutaneous location, the first subcutaneous implant module after transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the first drive signal from said first supercutaneous unit to the second subcutaneous implant module.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

after transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the first drive signal from the first supercutaneous unit to the second subcutaneous implant module, implanting the first subcutaneous implant module.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein:

transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the first drive signal from the first supercutaneous unit to the second subcutaneous implant module includes transmitting the first drive signal from a first transmitting coil in proximity to an outer skin of a recipient of the implantable auditory stimulation system to a subcutaneous receiving coil of the second subcutaneous implant module; and

wirelessly transmitting said second drive signal from said first subcutaneous implant module to the second subcutaneous implant module includes transmitting the second drive signal from a subcutaneous second transmitting coil of the first subcutaneous implant module to the subcutaneous receiving coil of the second subcutaneous implant module while the first transmitting coil is beyond communicative range with the subcutaneous receiving coil.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein:

the action of transcutaneously receiving, at said first implant module, at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals includes receiving the at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals with a second receiving coil of the first subcutaneous implant module.

16. A method for use with an implantable auditory stimulation device, comprising:

generating a wireless link between an implanted hearing unit and an implanted stimulation device, wherein said wireless link electrically interconnects said hearing unit and said stimulation device;

transmitting from said hearing unit to said stimulation device, using said wireless link, power to operate said stimulation device; and

transmitting from said hearing unit to said stimulation device, using said wireless link, a drive signal operative to actuate said stimulation device, wherein said stimulation device stimulates an auditory component of a patient, wherein

the transmitting of said power and said drive signal are performed simultaneously.

17. The method of claim 16, further including positioning the implanted hearing unit relative to the implanted stimulation device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein positioning comprises:

disposing a first coil associated with said hearing unit relative to a second coil associated with said implanted stimulation device.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein said first coil is disposed in an overlying relationship with said second coil.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

interconnecting said implanted stimulation device to said auditory component of the patient.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein said positioning and interconnecting is performed during a common procedure.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein said interconnecting is performed in a first procedure and said positioning is performed in a subsequent second procedure, wherein said first and second procedures are temporally distinct.

23. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

generating a drive signal at said hearing unit, said drive signal being operative to actuate the stimulation device.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein generating said drive signal comprises generating a signal operative for use with an intracochlear electrode.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein generating said drive signal comprises generating a signal operative for use with a middle ear stimulation device.

26. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

prior to generating the wireless link between the implanted hearing unit and the implanted stimulation device, and after transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting a second drive signal from a supercutaneous hearing unit to the stimulation device, thereby stimulating the auditory component of the patient implanting, at a subcutaneous location, the hearing unit.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein:

transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the second drive signal from the supercutaneous hearing unit to the stimulation device is executed without a hearing unit being implanted in a recipient of the implantable auditory stimulation device, wherein the hearing unit corresponds to the implanted hearing unit upon implantation of the hearing unit.

28. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

prior to generating the wireless link between the implanted hearing unit and the implanted stimulation device, and

after transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the second drive signal from the supercutaneous hearing unit to the stimulation device, implanting a hearing unit.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein:

transcutaneously wirelessly transmitting the second drive signal from the supercutaneous hearing unit to the stimulation device includes transmitting the second drive signal from a first transmitting coil in proximity to an outer skin of a recipient of the implantable auditory stimulation device to a subcutaneous receiving coil of the stimulation device; and

wirelessly transmitting said drive signal from said implanted hearing unit to the stimulation device includes transmitting the second drive signal from a subcutaneous second transmitting coil of the implanted hearing unit to the subcutaneous receiving coil of the stimulation device while the first transmitting coil is beyond communicative range with the subcutaneous receiving coil.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

transcutaneously receiving, at said implanted hearing unit, at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals by receiving the at least one of magnetic signals and electromagnetic signals with a second receiving coil of the implanted hearing unit.

31. The method of claim 27, further including positioning the implanted hearing unit relative to the implanted stimulation device.

32. A method of operating a hearing prosthesis, comprising:

wirelessly transmitting, from a first unit configured to output power and a drive commands to a second unit including a stimulation device configured to stimulate a recipient of the prosthesis, power to operate the stimulation device, wherein the first unit is a hearing unit;

wirelessly transmitting from said first unit to said second unit, drive commands operative to actuate said stimulation device such that the stimulation device stimulates the recipient, wherein

the transmissions are performed simultaneously.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein:

the second unit is a tissue stimulation device.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein:

the second unit is implanted in the recipient of the prosthesis.

35. The method of claim 32, wherein:

the second unit is an auditory stimulation device and the stimulation device stimulates an auditory component of the patient.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein:

the second unit is implanted in a recipient of the prosthesis.

37. The method of claim 32, wherein:

the drive commands are drive signals.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein:

the second unit is implanted in a recipient of the prosthesis.

39. The method of claim 32, wherein:

the first unit includes a processor configured to output drive signals corresponding to the drive commands and includes a power storage device.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein:

the second unit is implanted in a recipient of the prosthesis.

41. The method of claim 32, wherein:

the first unit includes a first receiving coil and a first transmitting coil.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising:

transmitting power to the first receiving coil from a second transmitting coil remote from the first unit.

43. The method of claim 42, further comprising:

transcutaneously transmitting said power to the first receiving coil from said second transmitting coil remote from the first unit.
