Abstract

The invention described herein is directed to method of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, comprising administering an effective amount of an osmolyte by at least one nasal cannula to a subject in need thereof. Also provided is a nasal cannula system for delivering an osmolyte, comprising a nebulizer and tubing having two ends, where the first end of the tubing is connected to the nebulizer and the second end of the tubing is tapered to fit in the nostril of a subject.

Claims

1. A method of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, comprising:

producing an effective amount of an aerosolized osmolyte with a nebulizer; and

delivering the aerosolized osmolyte continuously over a period of at least eight hours via a nasal cannula configured to limit accumulation of liquid droplets therein.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is cystic fibrosis.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the osmolyte is hypertonic saline.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the nasal cannula is connected to the nebulizer with a tubing having a length of at least two meters.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

heating the nasal cannula and the tubing.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein at least an inner surface of the tubing is coated.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the producing includes producing respirable particles having a particle size of 1-5 microns MMD.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the nebulizer has a reservoir volume of up to 2 liters.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the delivering includes delivering the aerosolized osmolyte produced with the nebulizer without refilling a reservoir coupled to the nebulizer.

10. The method of claim 4, wherein the tubing has an inner diameter of about 3-5 mm.

The method of claim 1, wherein the aerosolized osmolyte includes an anion selected from the group consisting of acetate, benzenesulfonate, benzoate, bicarbonate, bitartrate, bromide, calcium edetate, camsylate (camphorsulfonate), carbonate, chloride, citrate, 2HC1, edetate, edisylate (1,2-ethanedisulfonate), estolate (lauryl sulfate), esylate (1,2-ethanedisulfonate, fumarate, gluceptate, gluconate, glutamate, glycollylarsanilate (p-glycollamidophenylarsonate), hexylresorcinate, hydrabamine (N,N′

-Di(dehydroabietypethyl)ethylenediamine), hydroxynaphthoate, iodide, isethionate, lactate, lactobionate, malate, maleate, mandelate, mesylate, methylbromide, methylnitrate, methylsulfate, mucate, napsylate, nitrate, nitrte, pamoate (embonate), pantothenate, phosphate, diphosphate, polygalacturonate, salicylate, stearate, subacetate, succinate, sulfate, tannate, tartrate, teoclate (8-chlorotheophyllinate), triethiodide, chloride sulfate, nitrate, and gluconate.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the aerosolized osmolyte includes at least one of organic cations or metallic cations.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the aerosolized osmolyte includes a cation selected from the group consisting of benzathine (N,N′

-dibenzylethylenediamine), chloroprocaine, choline, diethanolamine, ethylenediamine, meglumine (N-methyl D-glucamine), procaine, D-lysine, L-lysine, D-arginine, L-arginine, triethylammonium, N-methyl D-glycerol, 3-carbon, 4-carbon, 5-carbon and 6-carbon organic cations, aluminum, calcium, lithium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, iron and ammonium.

14. A method, comprising:

delivering a flow of a gas to nebulizer system via a gas input port;

producing an aerosolized osmolyte within the nebulizer system; and

delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte continuously over a period of at least eighty minutes via a nasal cannula, the nasal cannula configured to limit accumulation of liquid droplets therein.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the nasal cannula includes a tube coupled to an output port of the nebulizer system.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the osmolyte includes hypertonic saline having a saline concentration of seven percent.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the tube has a length of at least two meters.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the tube has an inner diameter of between three and five millimeters.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte includes delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte continuously over a period of at least eight hours.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein an inner surface of the nasal cannula includes a coating formulated to minimize formation of droplets of the aerosolized osmolyte.

21. A method, comprising:

delivering a flow of a gas to a nebulizer system via a gas input port;

producing an aerosolized osmolyte within the nebulizer system; and

delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte via a nasal cannula, the nasal cannula including a tube having a length of at least two meters, an end portion of the tube coupled to the nebulizer system, the nasal cannula configured to limit accumulation of liquid droplets therein.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the osmolyte includes hypertonic saline having a saline concentration of approximately seven percent.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the tube has an inner diameter of less than five millimeters.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte includes delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte continuously over a period of at least eighty minutes.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte includes delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte continuously over a period of at least eight hours.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein an inner surface of the nasal cannula includes a coating formulated to minimize formation of droplets of the aerosolized osmolyte.

27. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

heating at least a portion of the nasal cannula during the delivering the flow of gas and the aerosolized osmolyte.
