Abstract

An improved method is provided for controlling a power tool having a rotary shaft. The method includes: disposing an inertial mass in a housing of the power tool, such that the inertial mass is freely rotatable about an axis of rotation which is axially aligned with the rotary shaft; monitoring rotational motion of the power tool in relation to the inertial mass during operation of the power tool; and activating a protective operation based on the rotational motion of the power tool in relation to the inertial mass.

Claims

1. A method for initiating a protective response in a power tool having a rotary shaft driven by a motor, comprising:

arranging a sensing element in fixed relation to a housing of the tool to detect rotational motion of the housing about a longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft;

monitoring rotational motion of the tool about the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft using the sensing element;

detecting speed of the motor;

setting a displacement threshold that varies as a function of the detected motor speed; and

activating a protective operation by a controller disposed in the tool when rotational displacement of the tool exceeds the displacement threshold.

The method of claim 1 further comprises disposing an inertial mass in a housing of the power tool, the inertial mass being freely rotatable about an axis of the rotation and the axis of rotation being axially aligned with the rotary shaft, wherein the sensing element detecting rotational motion of the housing in relation to the inertial mass.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprises disposing the inertial mass in the housing such that the axis of rotation is aligned askew with the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft.

The method of claim 1 wherein setting a displacement threshold further comprises setting a first value for the displacement threshold when motor speeds are low and setting a second value for the displacement threshold when motor speeds are high, where the first value is higher than the second value.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprises determining angular velocity of the housing about the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft and activating a protective operation when the angular velocity exceeds a predefined velocity threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the protective operation is selected from the group consisting of braking the rotary shaft, braking the motor, disengaging the motor from the rotary shaft and reducing slip torque of a clutch disposed between the motor and the rotary shaft.

7. A method for initiating a protective response in a power tool having a rotary shaft driven by a motor, comprising:

disposing an inertial mass comprised of a solid cylindrical body in a housing of the power tool, the inertial mass being freely rotatable about an axis of rotation and the axis of rotation being axially aligned with the rotary shaft,

monitoring rotational motion of the housing in relation to the inertial mass;

detecting speed of the motor;

setting a displacement threshold that varies as a function of the detected motor speed; and

activating a protective operation by a controller disposed in the tool when rotational displacement of the tool exceeds the displacement threshold.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprises arranging a sensing element in fixed relation to a housing of the tool to detect rotational motion of the housing in relation to the inertial mass.

9. The method of claim 7 further comprises disposing the inertial mass in the housing such that the axis of rotation is aligned askew with the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft.

The method of claim 7 wherein setting a displacement threshold further comprises setting a first value for the displacement threshold when motor speeds are low and setting a second value for the displacement threshold when motor speeds are high, where the first value is higher than the second value.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprises determining angular velocity of the housing about the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft and activating a protective operation when the angular velocity exceeds a predefined velocity threshold.

12. The method of claim 7 wherein the protective operation is selected from the group consisting of braking the rotary shaft, braking the motor, disengaging the motor from the rotary shaft and reducing slip torque of a clutch disposed between the motor and the rotary shaft.
