1. A roadway comprising:

  • an embedded conductor embedded in the roadway configured to transfer energy to a vehicle upon the roadway via magnetic induction or electric conduction;

    a dual-mode assembly formed upon the embedded conductor, the assembly configured such that when a vehicle is proximate to a portion of the material, the portion has a first electrical impedance substantially permitting flow of electrical current from the embedded conductor through the portion, and when the vehicle is not proximate to the portion, the portion has a second electrical impedance substantially preventing flow of electrical current from the embedded conductor through the portion; and

    and a source of energy applied upon or embedded in the roadway and electrically coupled to the embedded conductor, the source of energy configured to generate electric current to the embedded conductor.
