Abstract

Materials and methods related to blood pump systems are described. These can be used in patients to, for example, monitor arterial pressure, measure blood flow, maintain left ventricular pressure within a particular range, avoid left ventricular collapse, prevent fusion of the aortic valve in a subject having a blood pump, and provide a means to wean a patient from a blood pump.

Claims

1. A blood pump system, comprising:

a blood pump having an inflow conduit for receiving blood from a left ventricle of a heart and an outflow conduit for returning blood to a circulatory system; and

a controller operably connected to the blood pump;

wherein the inflow conduit comprises a first sensor to detect an inflow conduit pressure that is substantially the same as left ventricular pressure,

wherein the first sensor is adapted to send a signal regarding the inflow conduit pressure to the controller,

wherein the outflow conduit comprises a second sensor to detect an outflow conduit pressure that is substantially the same as arterial pressure,

wherein the second sensor is adapted to send a signal regarding the outflow conduit pressure to the controller, and

wherein the controller is adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that the speed of the blood pump is adjusted at a particular interval to increase left ventricular pressure as detected by the first sensor relative to arterial pressure as detected by the second sensor to open an aortic valve of the heart.

2. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the blood pump comprises a motor that moves blood through the blood pump and adjustment of the speed of the motor adjusts the speed of the blood pump.

3. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump comprises the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that the speed of the blood pump is adjusted to permit washing of the aortic valve sinus.

The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller is further adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that, at a predetermined length of time or number of heartbeats after the adjustment, the speed of the blood pump is increased such that ventricular pressure as detected by the first sensor is reduced to a previous level.

The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump comprises the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that the speed of the blood pump is decreased such that the detected left ventricular pressure as detected by the first sensor substantially equals arterial pressure as detected by the second sensor.

The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump comprises the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that the speed of the blood pump is decreased such that left ventricular pressure as detected by the first sensor exceeds arterial pressure as detected by the second sensor.

7. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump comprises the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that the speed of the blood pump is adjusted such that, during systole, left ventricular pressure as detected by the first sensor equals or exceeds arterial pressure as detected by the second sensor.

8. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump comprises the controller being adapted to send a signal to the blood pump such that, at the particular interval, the speed of the blood pump is reduced and the reduced speed is maintained for a predetermined length of time.

9. A method for preventing aortic valve fusion in a subject having a blood pump system that bypasses the subject'"'"'s aortic valve, the blood pump system comprising a blood pump, wherein the method comprises:

detecting left ventricular pressure via a sensor present at an inflow conduit of the blood pump system;

detecting arterial pressure via a sensor present at an outflow conduit of the blood pump system; and

adjusting the speed of the blood pump at a particular interval based on the detected left ventricular pressure and the detected arterial pressure such that left ventricular pressure is increased to open the aortic valve.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the blood pump comprises a motor, and wherein adjusting the speed of the motor adjusts the speed of the blood pump.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the blood pump speed adjustment is held constant for 5 to 10 beats or permits washing of the aortic valve sinus.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising increasing the speed of the blood pump such that the detected left ventricular pressure is reduced to a previous level.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting the speed of the blood pump at a particular interval comprises decreasing the speed of the blood pump such that the detected left ventricular pressure substantially equals the detected arterial pressure.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting the speed of the blood pump comprises decreasing the speed of the blood pump such that the detected left ventricular pressure exceeds the detected arterial pressure.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting the speed of the blood pump comprises adjusting the speed of the blood pump such that the detected left ventricular pressure equals or exceeds the detected arterial pressure during systole.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting the speed of the blood pump comprises, at the particular interval, reducing the speed of the blood pump and maintaining the reduced speed for a predetermined length of time.

17. A blood pump system, comprising:

a blood pump having an inflow conduit for receiving blood from a left ventricle of a heart and an outflow conduit for returning blood to a circulatory system; and

a controller operably connected to the blood pump, wherein the controller is configured to receive information sent from the blood pump for determining a pressure differential between the inflow conduit and the outflow conduit, and to send a signal to the blood pump to adjust the speed of the blood pump at a particular interval to adjust the pressure differential to cause an aortic valve of the heart to open.

18. The blood pump system of claim 17, wherein the information received includes an inflow conduit pressure that is substantially equivalent to ventricular pressure and an outflow pressure that is substantially equivalent to arterial pressure.

19. The blood pump system of claim 18, wherein the speed of the blood pump is adjusted such that, during systole, the ventricular pressure is equal to or exceeds the arterial pressure.

20. The blood pump system of claim 18, wherein the speed of the blood pump is decreased such that the ventricular pressure exceeds the arterial pressure.

21. The blood pump system of claim 17, wherein the speed of the blood pump is adjusted to permit washing of the aortic valve sinus or be held constant for 4-5 heart beats.

22. The blood pump system of claim 17, wherein the speed of the blood pump is adjusted to be reduced at the particular interval, and the reduced speed is maintained for a predetermined length of time.

23. A method for controlling a blood pump configured to bypass blood flow across an aortic valve of a heart, comprising:

receiving information from the blood pump; and

sending a signal to the pump based on the received information, the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be;

adjusted at a particular interval such that a pressure differential across an inflow conduit and an outflow conduit of the blood pump is adjusted to open the aortic valve; and

maintained at the adjusted speed for a predetermined length of time.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein receiving information from the blood pump comprises receiving information indicating an inflow conduit pressure that is substantially equivalent to ventricular pressure and an outflow pressure that is substantially equivalent to arterial pressure.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein sending the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be adjusted comprises sending a signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be adjusted such that, during systole, the ventricular pressure is equal to or exceeds the arterial pressure.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein sending the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be adjusted comprises sending a signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be adjusted such that such that the ventricular pressure exceeds the arterial pressure.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein sending the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be maintained at the adjusted speed for a predetermined length of time comprises sending a signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be maintained at the adjusted speed for a length of time to permit washing of the aortic valve sinus or for 4-5 heart beats.

28. The method of claim 23, wherein the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be adjusted comprises the signal causing the speed of the blood pump to be reduced at the particular interval.
