Abstract

A stent with a stent locking element and a method of securing a stent on a delivery implement, such as a catheter are disclosed. The locking element can include coupling elements capable of being releasably coupled to one another. The coupling elements may be adapted to inhibit shifting of the stent on the delivery implement. In some embodiments, the releasably coupled elements may secure the stent on the delivery implement.

Claims

1. A method of securing an implantable medical device on a delivery implement, comprising:

positioning a radially expandable implantable medical device on a delivery implement, wherein the medical device includes first and second structural elements and first and second coupling elements, and wherein the first coupling element is connected to the first structural element and the second coupling element is connected to the second structural element, wherein the implantable medical device is an expandable stent, wherein the first coupling element and the second coupling element are located on a proximal end or a distal end of the device on a node of the first structural element and a node of the second structural element, wherein the first and second structural elements bend at the nodes to allow contraction of the stent; and

compressing the positioned implantable medical device to a reduced diameter to releasably couple the first coupling element to the second coupling element.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element and the second coupling element are coupled to allow the stent to be compressed to a desired radius.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the delivery implement comprises an inflatable balloon.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to inhibit separating of the compressed implantable medical device from the delivery implement.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to inhibit shifting of the compressed implantable medical device on the delivery implement during introduction and transport of the device in a bodily lumen.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to inhibit separating of the compressed implantable medical device from the delivery implement during introduction and transport of the device in a bodily lumen.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to prevent shifting of the compressed implantable medical device on the delivery implement during introduction and transport of the device in a bodily lumen.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to prevent separating of the compressed implantable medical device from the delivery implement during introduction and transport of the device in a bodily lumen.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are configured to release upon exposure to one or more conditions.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the release of the releasably coupled elements comprises a clean or substantially clean separation of the elements, and wherein a structure of the elements after separation is the same or substantially the same as it was before coupling.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein at least one condition comprises a selected force range.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein at least one condition comprises a selected temperature range.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein at least one condition comprises a selected chemical environment.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising introducing and transporting the implantable medical device into a bodily lumen subsequent to releasably coupling the coupling elements.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the delivery implement is configured to expand the compressed implantable medical device at a selected site within a bodily lumen.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the delivery implement is configured to separate the first coupling element from the second coupling element.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the delivery implement is configured to apply a force to the compressed implantable medical device sufficient to separate the first coupling element from the second coupling element.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein releasably coupling the first coupling element to the second coupling element further comprises locking engaged coupling elements, and wherein locking comprises treating the engaged element to a procedure that releasably locks the coupling elements.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein locking the first coupling element to the second coupling element comprises laser welding the first coupling element to the second coupling element.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein locking the first coupling element to the second coupling element comprises treating the first coupling element and/or the second coupling element with an adhesive and/or solvent.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the releasably coupled elements are adapted to inhibit expansion of the compressed implantable medical device.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element and the second coupling element are configured to be releasably coupled contemporaneously with or subsequent to compressing of the implantable medical device.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element comprises at least two projections, wherein the second coupling element comprises at least two cavities, and wherein the at least two projections are configured to at least partially penetrate the at least two cavities.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element comprises a male end and the second coupling element comprises a female end, the step of releasably coupling including engaging of the male end into the female end along a curvature of the device during compression to the reduced diameter.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element and the second coupling element are next to each other in a circumferential direction.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein only structural elements at the proximal end or the distal end of the medical device are connected to coupling elements.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coupling element comprises two male ends and the second coupling element comprises two female ends.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second coupling elements are located on a proximal end or a distal end of the device and are proximal or distal to all structural elements of the device.
