1. A method for discovering devices in a peer to peer (P2P) wireless communication network, the method comprising:

  • a) during an advertise state of a first device, listening, at the first device, for polling signals from second devices on a first channel included in a plurality of channels;

    b) during the advertise state, transmitting, from the first device, a response to a first polling signal transmitted by one of the second devices on the first channel if the first polling signal is received on the first channel during the advertise state, wherein the advertise state has a first length of time during which acts a and b are performed;

    c) selecting, at the first device, a second channel from the plurality of channels for use during a search state of the first device, wherein the second channel is different than the first channel;

    d) transmitting, with the first device, a second polling signal on the selected second channel during the search state;

    e) listening during the search state, with the first device, for polling response signals on the selected second channel, the polling response signals responsive to the second polling signal; and

    after steps c, d and e, repeating acts a and b during a next advertise state having a second length of time different than the first length of time.
