1. An apparatus including an analyte meter, comprising:
- a housing having a display unit disposed thereon;
a data storage unit disposed within the housing, the data storage unit storing meal event information;
a strip port coupled to the housing and configured to receive a test strip that includes an analyte sample; and
a controller unit coupled to the housing, the controller configured to determine an analyte level corresponding to the analyte sample, the controller further configured to detect when the test strip is received in the strip port, and to determine if the test strip is received in the strip port within a predetermined time period of a meal event;
wherein when the test strip is determined as received in the strip port within the predetermined time period of the meal event, a carbohydrate bolus determination mode is automatically selected by the controller unit to determine a bolus dosage.

A computer program product for use with an analyte meter, the program product comprising a computer readable storage medium having a computer program stored thereon which controls the meter to store meal event information, to receive data related to an analyte sample, to determine an analyte level corresponding to the received data related to the analyte sample, to detect when a test strip is received in a strip port, to determine if the test strip is received in the strip port within a predetermined time period of a meal event, and to automatically select a carbohydrate bolus determination mode to determine a bolus dosage amount when the test strip is determined as received in the strip port within the predetermined time period of the meal event.
