1. A method for selecting a parameter for the design of a communication satellite comprising:

  • selecting a spot beam pattern comprising a plurality of spot beams directed to a plurality of corresponding regions of the earth, the spot beam pattern resulting in interference between spot beams;

    calculating antenna gains as a function of location at locations within one of the plurality of spot beams;

    calculating signal qualities as a function of the antenna gain at the locations, wherein the signal qualities include signal to noise and signal to interference ratios;

    calculating location-specific data-carrying capacities based on the signal qualities at the locations;

    calculating an average capacity from the location-specific data-carrying capacities for the locations; and

    selecting at least one parameter of the satellite based at least in part on the average capacity.
