Abstract

Methods and systems for utilizing a mobile computing device (e.g., such as a mobile phone) for use in controlling a model vehicle are described. Consistent with some embodiments, a mobile computing device provides various user controls for generating signals that are communicated to a radio transmitter device coupled with the mobile computing device, and ultimately broadcast to a receiver residing at a model vehicle. With some embodiments, the mobile computing device may be integrated with a controller housing which provides separate user controls, such that a combination of user controls present on the mobile computing device and the controller housing can be used to control a model vehicle.

Claims

1. A wireless transmitter device for use with a mobile computing device to control a radio-enabled model vehicle, the wireless transmitter device comprising:

a housing to physically affix the wireless transmitter device to the mobile computing device;

a communications interface to receive an electrical control signal from the mobile computing device; and

a radio transmitter module to receive the electrical control signal, translate the electrical control signal into a radio control signal, and broadcast the radio control signal to a receiver residing within the radio-enabled model vehicle.

2. The wireless transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the radio control signal enables one or more control components at the model vehicle to manipulate respective control mechanisms of the model vehicle.

3. The wireless transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the electrical control signal received from the mobile computing device includes individual control signals for controlling individual control mechanisms of the model vehicle.

The wireless transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the communications interface is to receive the electrical control signal from the mobile computing device via a wire cable coupling an audio port of the mobile computing device to the communications interface of the wireless transmitter device.

5. The wireless transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the communications interface to receive the electrical control signal from the mobile computing device is one of:

an audio port, a serial port, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, or a Bluetooth®

port.

6. The wireless transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the radio transmitter module is detachable from the housing of the wireless transmitter device.

7. The wireless transmitter device of claim 6, wherein the housing is shaped to receive one of a plurality of detachable industry standard radio transmitter modules having support for different radio frequencies and different signal encoding algorithms.

8. The wireless trans transmitter device of claim 1, wherein the mobile computing device is a mobile phone.

9. A machine-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon, which, when executed by a processor of a mobile computing device, cause the mobile computing device to perform operations including:

generate an electrical control signal for transmission to a receiver of a model vehicle, the electrical control signal including individual control signals for controlling different control mechanisms of the radio-enabled model vehicle; and

communicate the electrical control signal to a wireless transmitter device over a communications interface of the mobile computing device, thereby enabling the wireless transmitter device to translate the electrical control signal into a radio control signal for broadcast to the receiver of the model vehicle.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the communications interface of the mobile computing device is an audio port, and the electrical control signal is communicated from the mobile computing device to the wireless transmitter device via a wire cable communicatively coupling the audio port of the mobile computing device to an audio port of the wireless transmitter device.

11. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the communications interface of the mobile computing device is any one of:

an audio port, a serial port, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, or a Bluetooth®

port.

12. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to present via a touch screen display of the mobile computing device one or more user controls for controlling one or more control mechanisms of the model vehicle.

13. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 12 storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire from the touch screen display data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model vehicle.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the model vehicle is an airplane, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire from the touch screen display data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model airplane, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, ailerons, an elevator, a rudder, flaps, retractable landing gear, airbrakes, or propeller pitch.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the model vehicle is a helicopter, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire from the touch screen display data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model helicopter, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, a collective pitch control mechanism, a cyclic pitch control mechanism, a rudder, or a tail rotor.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the model vehicle is a model automobile, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire from the touch screen display data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model automobile, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, a steering control mechanism, breaks, or a dig control mechanism.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the model vehicle is a model boat, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire from the touch screen display data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model boat, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, rudder, or sails.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to generate one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model vehicle with data acquired from an accelerometer or a gyroscope of the mobile computing device.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the model vehicle is a model airplane, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire data from an accelerometer or a gyroscope of the mobile computing device, the data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model airplane, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, ailerons, an elevator, or a rudder.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the model vehicle is a model helicopter, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire data from an accelerometer or a gyroscope of the mobile computing device, the data for use in generating one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model helicopter, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, ailerons, an elevator, or a rudder.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the model vehicle is a model automobile, and the storage medium is storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to acquire data from an accelerometer or a gyroscope of the mobile computing device, the data for use in generating an individual control signal for controlling a control mechanism of the model automobile, the control mechanism including any one of:

a throttling mechanism, an electronic speed controller, steering control mechanism, breaks, or a dig control mechanism.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to present via a touch screen display a graphical control that, when manipulated, modifies how one of the individual control signals is generated by a user control with which the user-modifiable graphical control is associated.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to generate one of the individual control signals for controlling a control mechanism of the model vehicle from data received from a user control that is part of a controller housing with which the mobile computing device is attached and with which the mobile computing device communicates via a communications interface, the user control of the controller housing being any one of:

a joystick, a steering wheel, a toggle switch, a button, a slider, or a trigger.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 23, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to present via a touch screen display a graphical control that, when manipulated, modifies how the individual control signal generated from the data received from the user control that is part of the housing controller is generated.

25. The machine-readable medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to store a set of configuration settings for use with a particular model vehicle, the configuration settings defining any one or more of:

the sensitivity of one or more user controls for controlling the model vehicle, the end point of a user control for controlling the model vehicle, the response curve of a user control for controlling the model vehicle, or the mixing of two or control signals for use in control of two or more control mechanisms of a model vehicle; and

wherein the user controls include any one or more of;

a user control presented via the touch screen display of the mobile computing device;

a user control enabled via an accelerometer or gyroscope of the mobile computing device;

a joystick, steering wheel, toggle switch, button, trigger, or slider of a controller housing with which the mobile computing device is attached and communicates via a communications interface.

26. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to receive, from a radio transmitter device within the model vehicle, with a receiver of the mobile computing device, a wireless data signal encoding telemetric information captured with a sensing component of the model vehicle, and to convey the telemetric information via a touch screen display of the mobile computing device, the telemetric information including any one or more of:

a battery

level, a fuel level, motor RPMs (revolutions per minute), radio signal strength indication (RSSI), attitude, altitude, airspeed, compass orientation, and GPS position.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device i) to receive telemetric information from a wireless transmitter module coupled to the mobile computing device via a communications interface, the telemetric information captured with a sensing component of the model vehicle, and ii) to convey the telemetric information via a touch screen display of the mobile computing device, the telemetric information including any one or more of:

a battery

level, a fuel level, motor RPMs (revolutions per minute), radio signal strength indication (RSSI), attitude, altitude, airspeed, compass orientation, and GPS position.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to receive, from a radio transmitter device within the model vehicle, with a receiver of the mobile computing device, a wireless data signal encoding a picture or video captured with an image capturing component of the model vehicle, and to present the picture or video via a touch screen display of the mobile computing device.

The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device i) to receive a picture or video from a wireless transmitter module coupled to the mobile computing device via a communications interface, the picture or video captured with an image capturing component of the model vehicle, and ii) to present the picture or video via a touch screen display of the mobile computing device.

30. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 9, storing further instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile computing device to receive telemetric information generated at the model vehicle and convey the telemetric information by activating any one or more of:

a speaker of the mobile computing device, a vibrating device of the mobile computing device, a mechanism for moving a weight within a controller housing to which the mobile computing device is communicatively coupled via a communications interface to thereby convey lateral acceleration data from the model vehicle, a force feedback mechanism of a user control of a housing controller to which the mobile computing device is communicatively coupled via a communications interface.

31. A controller housing configured to receive and communicate with a mobile computing device, the controller housing, when coupled with the mobile computing device, operable as a controller for a radio-enabled model vehicle, the controller housing comprising:

one or more user controls, each user control for generating an individual control signal for controlling a control mechanism of a model vehicle;

a communications interface to communicate the individual control signals generated by the one or more user controls to the mobile computing device that is attached to the controller housing via the communications interface, and to receive from the mobile computing device an electrical control signal that includes one or more individual control signals for controlling individual control mechanisms of the model vehicle; and

a radio transmitter module interface to communicate the electrical control signal received from the mobile computing device to a radio transmitter module so as to enable the radio transmitter module to translate the electrical control signal to a radio control signal for transmission to a receiver of the model vehicle.

The controller housing of claim 31, wherein the electrical control signal to be received from the mobile computing device via the communications interface and to be communicated to the radio transmitter module via the radio transmitter module interface includes at least one individual control signal generated with a user control of the mobile computing device.

33. The controller housing of claim 31, including a memory device to store configuration settings received from the mobile computing device via the communications interface.

34. The controller housing of claim 31, further comprising:

a memory device for storing instructions including an operating system; and

a processor for executing the instructions.

35. The controller housing of claim 31, wherein the communications interface to receive the electrical control signal from the mobile computing device is one of:

an audio port, a serial port, a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, or a Bluetooth®

port.

36. The controller housing of claim 31, further comprising:

a mechanism for moving a weight within the controller housing in response to a signal received via the communications interface from the mobile computing device, the signal generated by the mobile computing device in response to receiving telemetric information from a sensing component in the model vehicle, the movement of the weight give the operator the feeling of directional tilt of the model vehicle.

37. The controller housing of claim 31, further comprising:

a user control having a force feedback mechanism configured to be activated in response to the housing controller receiving a signal from the mobile computing device via the communications interface, activation of the force feedback mechanism to provide an operator of the controller with a feeling of being present in the model vehicle.
