Abstract

An apparatus for analyzing, identifying or imaging an target including first and second laser beams coupled to a pair of photoconductive switches to produce CW signals in one or more bands in a range of frequencies greater than 100 GHz focused on and transmitted through or reflected from the target; and a detector for acquiring spectral information from signals received from the target and using a multi-spectral heterodyne process to generate an electrical signal representative of some characteristics of the target. The lasers are tuned to different frequencies and a frequency shifter in the path of one laser beam allows the terahertz beam to be finely adjusted in one or more selected frequency bands.

Claims

1. An apparatus for analyzing, identifying or imaging a target, comprising:

a first housing including first and second lasers having tunable frequencies and coupled to first and second optical fibers respectively, said first laser to produce a first output beam and said second laser to produce a second output beam, said first output beam and said second output beam having different frequencies, wherein a first portion of said first output beam and a first portion of said second output beam are to produce a first composite output beam configured to be swept over a frequency band as the frequencies of at least one of the lasers is swept, wherein the first housing further comprises;

a frequency shifting element coupled to a reference oscillator and positioned to receive a second portion of said first output beam to controllably shift the frequency of said second portion of said first output beam; and

a beam combiner coupled to the output of the frequency shifting element and to a second portion of the second output beam to produce a second composite output beam;

a second housing including (i) a first photoconductive switch activated by the second composite output beam for producing electromagnetic radiation in a range of frequencies greater than 100 GHz, and (ii) a radiator for directing said radiation to a target; and

a third housing including (i) a receiver for acquiring electromagnetic radiation in a range of frequencies greater than 100 GHz from the target, and (ii) a second photoconductive switch activated by the first composite output beam and coupled to the electromagnetic radiation from the receiver and functioning to generate an electrical signal representative of some characteristic of the target.

An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first housing includes a processor coupled to the electrical signal from the second photoconductive switch for analyzing said electrical signal and determining a characteristic of said target based upon the absorption characteristics of the target in a range of frequencies greater than 100 GHz.

3. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first and second lasers are DFB or DBR lasers tuned to different frequencies.

4. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, further comprising first and second thermoelectric coolers coupled to the first and second lasers respectively for independently coarsely tuning each of the lasers over a wavelength range of about 5 nm in intervals or step sizes of about 0.01 nm.

5. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the frequency shifting element comprises a frequency shifter coupled to the first laser for tuning the difference in frequency between the first laser and the second laser over at least a portion of the frequency range between 0 and 10 GHz.

6. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the frequency shifting element comprises a frequency shifter coupled to the first laser for tuning the difference in frequency between the first laser and the second laser with an adjustable frequency intervals or step size between 1 Hz and 1 GHz.

7. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the frequency shifting element comprises a frequency modulator coupled to the first laser and having an electronically adjustable bias for tuning the difference in frequency between the first laser and the second laser.

8. An apparatus as defined in claim 7, wherein the frequency modulator performs a frequency shift of the incoming optical beam from the first laser.

9. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the reference oscillator is configured for tuning the difference in frequency between the first laser and the second laser with a frequency intervals or step size less than 1 MHz.

10. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the reference oscillator is configured for tuning the difference in frequency between the first laser and the second laser.

11. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the reference oscillator has an adjustable frequency intervals or step size between 1 Hz and 1 GHz.

12. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first, second and third housing are designed to be worn or supported by the user.

13. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the optical fibers are polarization maintaining fibers.

14. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first photoconductive switch is biased with a constant electrical potential.

15. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first photoconductive switch is biased with a constant or modulated electrical potential.

16. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein said first and second lasers are tunable external cavity lasers.

17. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first housing includes a keypad and a display.

18. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the first housing includes a self-contained power source.

19. An apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the second photoconductive switch performs a heterodyne downconversion of the electromagnetic radiation acquired from the receiver for generating an electrical signal representative of some characteristics of the object.
