Abstract

Embodiments include a system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient. The system may include at least one computer system configured to receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient'"'"'s heart, and create a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient'"'"'s heart based on the patient-specific data. The at least one computer system may be further configured to create a physics-based model relating to a blood flow characteristic of the patient'"'"'s heart and determine a fractional flow reserve within the patient'"'"'s heart based on the three-dimensional model and the physics-based model.

Claims

1. A system for determining patient-specific cardiovascular information, the system comprising:

at least one computer system configured to;

receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient;

create a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determine, for each of a plurality of portions of the anatomical structure of the patient, a resistance associated with flow through each of the plurality of portions, wherein the resistance is determined based on resistance values associated with other patients'"'"' patient-specific data; and

determine information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the three-dimensional model and a second model generated based on the determined resistances.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one computer system is configured to determine each resistance based on an empirical model based on a library of resistance values stored in relation to other patients'"'"' patient-specific data.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine each resistance based on resistance values associated with patient-specific data, by:

identifying a geometry of a patient vessel segment within the portion of the anatomical structure;

identifying, in a database of other patients'"'"' patient-specific data, a matching geometry of another patient'"'"'s vessel segment that matches the identified geometry of the patient vessel segment; and

associating with the patient vessel segment a resistance stored in relation to the matching geometry.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to:

determine the information regarding the blood flow characteristic based on the second model by incorporating into the second model the individual resistances determined for each of the plurality of portions of the anatomical structure of the patient.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the anatomical structure of the patient includes at least a portion of an aorta and at least a portion of a plurality of coronary arteries emanating from the portion of the aorta; and

the determined resistances reflect a property of flow through the plurality of coronary arteries.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine the total flow through the portion of the anatomical structure based on a determined mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine the mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure using the patient-specific data.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the patient-specific data includes imaging data, and the at least one computer system is further configured to determine the mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure using the imaging data.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the information includes at least one of a blood pressure, blood velocity, blood flow rate, or fractional flow reserve within the patient'"'"'s anatomical structure.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the anatomical structure of the patient includes at least one of a portion of a plurality of arteries in the patient'"'"'s heart, neck, head, thorax, abdomen, arms, or legs.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the anatomical structure of the patient includes at least a portion of an aorta and at least a portion of a plurality of coronary arteries emanating from the portion of the aorta; and

the determined resistances reflect a property of flow through the plurality of coronary arteries.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the flow through the portion of the anatomical structure based on a determined mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising determining the mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure using the patient-specific data.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the patient-specific data includes imaging data, and the method further comprises determining the mass or volume of at least a portion of the anatomical structure using the imaging data.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the information includes at least one of a blood pressure, blood velocity, blood flow rate, or fractional flow reserve within the patient'"'"'s anatomical structure.

11. A method for determining patient-specific cardiovascular information using at least one computer system, the method comprising:

receiving, in the at least one computer system, patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient;

creating, using the at least one computer system, a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determining, using the at least one computer system, for each of a plurality of portions of the anatomical structure of the patient, a resistance associated with flow through each of the plurality of portions, wherein the resistance is determined based on resistance values associated with other patients'"'"' patient-specific data; and

determining, using the at least one computer system, information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the three-dimensional model and a second model generated based on the determined resistances.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising, determining each resistance based on an empirical model based on a library of resistance values stored in relation to other patients'"'"' patient-specific data.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein determining each resistance based on resistance values associated with other patients'"'"' patient-specific data, includes:

identifying a geometry of a patient vessel segment within the portion of the anatomical structure;

identifying, in a database of other patients'"'"' patient-specific data, a matching geometry of another patient'"'"'s vessel segment that matches the identified geometry of the patient vessel segment; and

associating with the patient vessel segment a resistance stored in relation to the matching geometry.

The method of claim 13, further comprising determining the information regarding the blood flow characteristic based on the second model by incorporating into the second model the individual resistances determined for each of the plurality of portions of the anatomical structure of the patient.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the anatomical structure of the patient includes at least one of a portion of a plurality of arteries in the patient'"'"'s heart, neck, head, thorax, abdomen, arms, or legs.

21. A method for determining patient-specific cardiovascular information using at least one computer system, the method comprising:

receiving, in the at least one computer system, patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient;

creating, using the at least one computer system, a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determining, using the at least one computer system, for each of a plurality of segments of the anatomical structure of the patient, a resistance associated with blood flow through each of the plurality of segments, wherein the resistance is determined based on resistance values stored in relation to corresponding segments of other patients'"'"' anatomical structure;

generating a reduced-order model of blood flow through the portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on a plurality of resistance values determined for each of the plurality of segments; and

determining, using the at least one computer system, information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the reduced-order model.
