Abstract

This invention provides systems and methods that allow a user to change the size of a background used with a graphics-based user interface. This enables tailored background sizes based on user preference and allowable conditions, which are particularly useful with display devices having a large display area. By custom sizing a background to current conditions, a user may navigate an image among obstacles at a receiving surface and obstacles along a projection path between a projection lens and receiving surface. In addition, a user may customize the background size on a large LCD screen according to more suitable dimensions for an image used in the background or to a personal preference, thereby creating a personalized look and feel for the graphics-based user interface. One embodiment of the present invention defines a usable area for a graphics-based user interface according to the current size of the background. Changing the background size in this case also then changes the usable area for the graphics-based user interface.

Claims

1. A computer readable storage device having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution, cause a display device including a processor to perform operations, comprising:

displaying a graphical interface at a defined display size of the display device comprising displaying a background of the graphical interface with a perimeter within the defined display size, wherein the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface;

receiving input indicating a change to the perimeter of the background; and

changing the displaying of the background according to the change to the perimeter concurrently with the displaying the graphical interface at the defined display size, wherein the change to the perimeter results in the perimeter remaining within and being less than the defined display size.

2. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change in position of the background.

3. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

4. The computer readable storage device of claim 3, wherein the predetermined color is black.

5. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change of an aspect ratio of the background.

6. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change of a shape of the background.

7. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

8. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the changing the displaying of the background comprises adjusting a location of at least one of an icon, a control bar, a tool bar, or a window of the graphical interface to be within the perimeter of the background.

9. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change to a size of the background.

10. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change of a background image relative to which the background is sized.

11. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the change to the perimeter comprises a change of a geometric center of the background from a first value to a second value different from the first value.

12. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the display device is a projection-type display device.

13. The computer readable storage device of claim 1, wherein the display device comprises a display screen.

14. A method comprising:

displaying, by a display device including a processor, a graphical interface at a defined display size of the display device comprising displaying a background of the graphical interface with a perimeter within the defined display size, wherein the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface;

receiving input specifying a change to the perimeter of the background; and

changing the displaying of the background to implement the change to the perimeter concurrently with displaying the graphical interface at the defined display size, wherein the changing the displaying comprises displaying the perimeter within and at a size less than the defined display size.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the predetermined color is black.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the changing the displaying of the background further comprises adjusting a location of at least one of an icon, a control bar, a tool bar, or a window of the graphical interface to be within the perimeter of the background.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the input comprises a change of a geometric center of the background from a first value to a second value different from the first value.

20. A system, comprising:

a processor, communicatively coupled to a memory that stores computer-executable instructions, that executes or facilitates execution of the computer-executable instructions, comprising;

a display background control tool configured to

display a graphical interface at a display size of a display device, wherein the graphical interface comprises a background with a perimeter displayed within the display size and the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface,

receive input representing a change to the perimeter of the background, and

adjust the display of the background to cause the change to the perimeter while displaying the graphical interface at the display size, wherein after the display is adjusted, the perimeter remains within and is at a size less than the display size.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the display background control tool is further configured to display areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

22. The system of claim 20, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

23. The system of claim 20, wherein the display background control tool is further configured to adjust a location of at least one of an icon, a control bar, a tool bar, or a window of the graphical interface to be within the perimeter of the background.

24. The system of claim 20, wherein the input comprises a change of a geometric center of the background from a first value to a second value different from the first value.

25. A system, comprising:

means for displaying a graphical interface at a defined display size of a display device, wherein the graphical interface comprises a background with a perimeter displayed within the defined display size and the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface; and

means for receiving input indicating a change to the perimeter of the background,

wherein the means for displaying comprises means for modifying the displaying of the background according to the change to the perimeter concurrently with the displaying of the graphical interface at the defined display size and means for displaying the perimeter within and at a size less than the defined display size.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the means for displaying further comprises means for displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

28. The system of claim 25, wherein the means for modifying comprises means for adjusting a location of at least one of an icon, a control bar, a tool bar, or a window of the graphical interface to be within the perimeter after the change.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the input comprises a change of a geometric center of the background from a first value to a second value different from the first value.

30. A projection-type display device, comprising:

a display component configured to initiate a display of a graphical interface at a defined display size of the projection-type display device, wherein the graphical interface comprises a background with a perimeter within the defined display size and the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface; and

a display background control tool configured to

receive an input specifying a change to the perimeter of the background, and

instruct the display component to change the display of the background to implement the change to the perimeter concurrently with the display of the graphical interface at the defined display size, wherein the change to the perimeter results in the perimeter remaining within the defined display size and having a size less than the defined display size.

31. The projection-type display device of claim 30, wherein the display background control tool is further configured to instruct the display component to display areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

32. The projection-type display device of claim 30, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

33. A method, comprising:

displaying, by a projection display device including a processor, a graphical interface at a defined display size of the display device comprising displaying a background of the graphical interface with a perimeter within the defined display size, wherein the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface;

receiving input indicative of a change to the perimeter of the background; and

altering the displaying of the background to result in the change to the perimeter concurrently with the displaying of the graphical interface at the defined display size, wherein the altering the displaying comprises displaying the perimeter within and at a size less than the defined display size.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

35. A computer-readable storage device having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution, cause a projection display device including a processor to perform operations, comprising:

displaying a graphical interface at a defined display size of the display device comprising displaying a background of the graphical interface with a perimeter within the defined display size, wherein the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface;

receiving input indicating a change to the perimeter of the background; and

changing the displaying of the background to satisfy the change to the perimeter concurrently with the displaying the graphical interface at the defined display size, wherein the changing the displaying comprises displaying the perimeter within and at a size less than the defined display size.

36. The computer-readable storage device of claim 35, wherein the operations further comprise displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

37. The computer-readable storage device of claim 35, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.

38. A system, comprising:

means for displaying a graphical interface at a defined display size of a projection-type display device, wherein display of the graphical interface comprises display of a background with a perimeter within the defined display size and the perimeter defines a usable area of the graphical interface; and

means for receiving an input specifying a change to the perimeter of the background,

wherein the means for displaying comprises means for adjusting the display of the background to carry out the change to the perimeter concurrently with the displaying of the graphical interface at the defined display size and means for displaying the perimeter within and at a size less than the defined display size.

39. The system of claim 38, further comprising means for displaying areas outside of the perimeter in a predetermined color.

40. The system of claim 38, wherein the input comprises a change of a shape of the background to a selected logo.
