1. A device for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the device comprising:

  • a continuous glucose sensor that produces a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration in the host, the data stream including a plurality of time spaced sensor data points; and

    an integrated receiver that receives the data stream from the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the integrated receiver includes a single point glucose monitor, a processor, and a computer readable memory, wherein the single point glucose monitor is configured to receive a biological sample from the host and to measure the concentration of glucose in the sample, and wherein the computer readable memory includes instructions configured to cause the processor to process the data stream received from the continuous glucose sensor, determine if a signal level of the plurality of time spaced data points in the data stream exceeds a first predetermined threshold, determine if a rate of change of the time spaced data points in the data stream exceeds a second predetermined threshold, and calibrate the data stream using the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor based on the signal level determination and the rate of change determination;

    wherein the computer readable memory includes instructions configured to cause the processor to calibrate or recalibrate the data stream received from the continuous glucose sensor when the determined signal level of the plurality of time spaced data points in the data stream is below the first predetermined threshold and the determined rate of change of the time spaced data points in the data stream is below the second predetermined threshold.
