1. An intervertebral artificial disc for positioning between a first and second vertebra, comprising:

  • a first endplate having a plurality of protrusions for attaching to the first vertebrae and an extension portion extending towards the second adjacent vertebra;

    a second endplate having a plurality of protrusions for attaching to the second vertebrae and an extension portion extending towards the first vertebrae;

    a flexible member having an upper portion and a lower portion;

    a plate positioned completely within a first cavity in the upper portion of the flexible member; and

    ,wherein the extension portion of the first endplate is adapted to fit within the first cavity in the upper portion of the flexible member and the extension portion of the second endplate is adapted to fit within a second cavity in the lower portion of the flexible memberwherein the extension portion of the first endplate engages with the plate to allow translation.
