Method and system for adaptively obtaining bandwidth allocation requests
DC CAFCFirst Claim
1. A subscriber station for a broadband wireless communication system comprising:
- a transceiver configured totransmit a poll-me bit to the base station requesting to be provided an allocation of UL bandwidth in which to transmit a bandwidth request, andreceive an uplink (UL) bandwidth grant for the subscriber unit in response to the bandwidth request; and
a processor having a Media Access Control (MAC) module configured todetermine a required amount of UL bandwidth pertaining to a connection established at the subscriber station, generate the bandwidth request indicative of the required amount of UL bandwidth, and allocate the UL bandwidth grant to one or more connections established at the subscriber station without control from the base station on how the subscriber station is to allocate the bandwidth grant among the one or more connections.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for adaptively obtaining bandwidth requests in a broadband wireless communication system. The method and apparatus includes dynamically varying technique combinations enabling a plurality of users to efficiently request bandwidth from a shared base station. A user may “piggyback” a new bandwidth request upon, or set a “poll-me bit” within, presently allocated bandwidth. A base station may poll users, individually or in groups, by allocating unrequested bandwidth for new requests. Polling may respond to a “poll-me bit,” and/or it may be adaptively periodic at a rate based on communication status parameters, such as recent communication activity and connection QoS levels Group polling permits a possibility of collisions. Polling policies may be established for dynamically varying user groups, or may be determined for each user. Dynamic selection of appropriate polling techniques makes use of efficiency benefits associated with each technique.

16. A subscriber station for a broadband wireless communication system comprising:
-
a processor having a Media Access Control (MAC) module configured to generate an explicit message requesting a polling opportunity for enabling the subscriber station to request uplink (UL) bandwidth, provide a bandwidth request indicative of a required amount of UL bandwidth pertaining to a specified connection established at the subscriber station, and allocate a bandwidth grant, received in response to the bandwidth request, among one or more connections without control from a base station on how the subscriber station is to allocate the bandwidth grant; and transmit and receive circuitry configured to transmit the explicit message to the base station, receive the polling opportunity, and transmit the bandwidth request within the polling opportunity. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)
