Open vessel sealing instrument with hourglass cutting mechanism and overratchet safety
First Claim
1. An open electrosurgical forceps for sealing tissue, comprising:
- a pair of first and second shaft members each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, the jaw members being movable from a first position in spaced relation relative to one another to at least one subsequent position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;
each of the jaw members including an electrically conductive sealing plate for communicating electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween;
a generally hourglass-shaped flexible cutting mechanism including a proximal portion, a distal portion including a knife blade, and a notched portion disposed between the distal portion and the proximal portion;
at least one of the jaw members including a curved knife channel defined along a length thereof, the curved knife channel being dimensioned to reciprocate the cutting mechanism therealong, the notched portion of the cutting mechanism including two symmetrically-disposed notches on opposite sides thereof that reduce the side profile of the cutting mechanism between the proximal portion and the distal portion thereof to facilitate distal translation of the knife blade within the curved knife channel;
an actuator operatively connected to one of the shaft members for selectively advancing the cutting mechanism from a first position wherein the cutting mechanism is disposed proximal to tissue held between the jaw members to at least one subsequent position wherein at least a portion of the knife blade is disposed distal to tissue held between the jaw members.

Abstract
An open electrosurgical forceps includes a pair of first and second shaft members each having a jaw member disposed at its distal end. The jaw members are movable from a first position in spaced relation relative to one another to a subsequent position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue. Each of the jaw members includes an electrically conductive scaling plate for communicating electrosurgical energy through tissue. A curved knife channel is defined along the length of one of the jaw members and is dimensioned to reciprocate a cutting mechanism. An actuator selectively advances the cutting mechanism from a first position proximal to tissue held between the jaw members to a subsequent position distal to tissue held between the jaw members. The cutting mechanism includes a generally hourglass-shaped flexible blade having a mutually aggregating notch.
