1. A wastewater treatment system comprising:

  • a plurality of treatment zones including an upstream treatment zone in fluid communication with one or more downstream treatment zones;

    a membrane module in fluid communication downstream of the upstream treatment zone and the one or more downstream treatment zones, the membrane module comprising a filter membrane;

    a gravity-settling device in fluid communication downstream of the upstream treatment zone and upstream of the one or more downstream treatment zones;

    a weir positioned between the upstream treatment zone and the gravity settling device and configured to provide a flow of liquid between the upstream treatment zone and the gravity settling device responsive to a flow of wastewater into the wastewater treatment system exceeding an average design flow rate and to block the flow of liquid between the upstream treatment zone and the gravity settling device responsive to the flow of wastewater into the wastewater treatment system not exceeding the average design flow rate;

    wherein a height of the weir is automatically adjustable based on a measurement of a process variable of the wastewater treatment system.
