Abstract

A transcutaneous energy transfer system, transcutaneous charging system, external power source, external charger and methods of transcutaneous energy transfer and charging for an implantable medical device and an external power source/charger. The implantable medical device has a secondary coil adapted to be inductively energized by an external primary coil at a carrier frequency. The external power source/charger has a primary coil and circuitry capable of inductively energizing the secondary coil by driving the primary coil at a carrier frequency adjusted to the resonant frequency to match a resonant frequency of the tuned inductive charging circuit, to minimize the impedance of the tuned inductive charging circuit or to increase the efficiency of energy transfer.

Claims

1. A charger for an implantable medical device having a rechargeable power source and a secondary charging coil operatively coupled to said rechargeable power source, comprising:

a primary charging coil; and

circuitry, operatively coupled to said primary charging coil, capable of inductively energizing said secondary coil by driving said primary charging coil at a carrier frequency when said primary charging coil of said external charger is externally placed in proximity of said secondary charging coil creating a tuned inductive charging circuit having an energy transfer efficiency;

said circuitry adjusting said carrier frequency to increase said energy transfer efficiency of said inductively tuned charging circuit.

2. The charger of claim 1 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said energy transfer efficiency of said inductively tuned charging circuit.

3. The charger of claim 1 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to increase a ratio of an amount of power out of said external charger to an amount of power into said external charger.

4. The charger of claim 3 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said ratio of said amount of power out of said external charger to said amount of power into said external charger.

5. The charger of claim 4 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power induced in said implantable medical device.

6. The charger of claim 5 wherein said amount of power induced in said implantable medical device comprises multiplying a voltage of said rechargeable power source by a current into said rechargeable power source.

7. The charger of claim 6 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power generated by said external charger.

8. The charger of claim 7 wherein said amount of power generated by said external charger comprises multiplying an amount of voltage of said external charger by an amount of current driven into said primary coil.

9. The charger of claim 1 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to increase an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.

10. The charger of claim 9 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.

11. A system for charging, comprising:

an implantable medical device, comprising;

a rechargeable power source; and

a secondary charging coil operatively coupled to said rechargeable power source; and

an external charger, comprising;

a primary charging coil; and

circuitry, operatively coupled to said primary charging coil, capable of inductively energizing said secondary coil by driving said primary charging coil at a carrier frequency when said primary charging coil of said external charger is externally placed in proximity of said secondary charging coil creating a tuned inductive charging circuit having an energy transfer efficiency;

said circuitry adjusting said carrier frequency to increase said energy transfer efficiency of said inductively tuned charging circuit.

12. The system for charging of claim 11 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said energy transfer efficiency of said inductively tuned charging circuit.

13. The system for charging of claim 11 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to increase a ratio of an amount of power out of said external charger to an amount of power into said external charger.

14. The system for charging of claim 13 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said ratio of said amount of power out of said external charger to said amount of power into said external charger.

15. The system for charging of claim 14 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power induced in said implantable medical device.

16. The system for charging of claim 15 wherein said amount of power induced in said implantable medical device comprises multiplying a voltage of said rechargeable power source by a current into said rechargeable power source.

17. The system for charging of claim 16 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power generated by said external charger.

18. The system for charging of claim 17 wherein said amount of power generated by said external charger comprises multiplying an amount of voltage of said external charger by an amount of current driven into said primary coil.

19. The system for charging of claim 11 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to increase an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.

20. The system for charging of claim 19 wherein said circuitry adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.

21. A method of charging a rechargeable power source of a medical device implanted in a patient, having a secondary charging coil operatively coupled to said rechargeable power source, using an external charger having a primary charging coil, comprising the steps of:

inductively energizing said secondary charging coil by driving said primary charging coil at a carrier frequency while said primary charging coil is positioned externally of said patient in proximity of said secondary charging coil, creating a tuned inductive charging circuit having an energy transfer efficiency; and

adjusting said carrier frequency to increase said energy transfer efficiency of said tuned inductive charging circuit.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said adjusting step adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said energy transfer efficiency of said inductively tuned charging circuit.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein said adjusting step adjusts said carrier frequency to increase a ratio of an amount of power out of said external charger to an amount of power into said external charger.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said adjusting step adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize said ratio of said amount of power out of said external charger to said amount of power into said external charger.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power induced in said implantable medical device.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein said amount of power induced in said implantable medical device comprises multiplying a voltage of said rechargeable power source by a current into said rechargeable power source.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein said amount of power out of said external charger is gauged by an amount of power generated by said external charger.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein said amount of power generated by said external charger comprises multiplying an amount of voltage of said external charger by an amount of current driven into said primary coil.

29. The method of claim 21 wherein said adjusting step adjusts said carrier frequency to increase an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein said adjusting step adjusts said carrier frequency to maximize an amount of current driving said primary coil while essentially maintaining other parameters relatively constant.
