Abstract
Various universal ports for installation into a colon are disclosed. Various embodiments include expandable port bodies that may employ selectively deployable tissue-engaging barbs for securing the port in position within the colon. Some embodiments also employ tissue cutting members that may be deployed to sever the colon. Some embodiments also employ a flexible sleeve that may extend from the port out through the anus to provide a passageway for passing surgical instruments and into and out of the rectum and also for removing severed specimens therefrom.

9. A universal port for insertion into a colon, said universal port comprising:
-
an annular port body defining a centrally-disposed port therethrough; a plurality of tissue-engaging barbs operably supported within said annular port body and configured for movement from a first insertion position within said annular port body to a second deployed position wherein a tissue-engaging portion thereof protrudes outward from said annular port body; and a deployment drive assembly operably supported within said annular port body and configured for operable engagement with a surgical instrument, said deployment drive assembly operably interfacing with each of said tissue-engaging barbs such that upon application of a drive motion from the surgical instrument in a first direction causes said tissue-engaging barbs to move from said first insertion position to said second deployed position and upon another application of said drive motion from the surgical instrument in a second direction causes said tissue-engaging barbs to move from said second deployed position to said first insertion position. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11)
