Abstract

A fibrous tissue repair device includes first and second tubular anchors having corresponding longitudinal passages. The tissue repair device includes corresponding first and second inserters. Each inserter has a shaft with a distal portion received in the longitudinal passage of the corresponding tubular anchor. A flexible strand couples the first and second anchors.

Claims

1. A fibrous tissue repair device for repairing a defect in soft tissue comprising:

a first anchor extending along a first longitudinal axis between a first planar end face and a second planar end face of the first anchor, the first and second planar end faces being transverse to the first longitudinal axis, the first anchor defining a first longitudinal passage;

a first inserter having a first elongated shaft with a distal portion received in the first longitudinal passage of the first anchor, the first inserter having an integral buttress transverse to the first elongated shaft for abutting on the first planar end face of the first anchor, the distal portion extending distally from the buttress to a distal piercing end, the distal piercing end extending distally beyond the second planar end face of the first anchor upon the first planar end face of the first anchor abutting the buttress;

a second anchor extending along a second longitudinal axis between a first planar end face and a second planar end face of the second anchor, the first and second planar end faces being transverse to the second longitudinal axis, the second anchor defining a second longitudinal passage;

a second inserter having a second elongated shaft with a distal portion received in the second longitudinal passage of the second anchor, the second inserter having an integral buttress transverse to the second elongated shaft for abutting on the first planar end face of the second anchor, the distal portion extending distally from the buttress to a distal piercing end, the distal piercing end extending distally beyond the second planar end face of the second anchor upon the first planar end face of the second anchor abutting the buttress; and

a flexible strand coupling the first and second anchors.

2. The repair device of claim 1, wherein each of the first and second anchors includes a semi-circular portion.

3. The repair device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first anchor and the second anchor includes a separate strand loop, the flexible strand that couples the first and second anchors passing through the flexible strand loop to couple the first and second anchors.

4. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the flexible strand passes through the first and second anchors to directly couple the first and second anchors.

5. The repair device of claim 1, further comprising a single cannula, wherein the distal portion of each of the first and second inserters passes through the single cannula.

6. The repair device of claim 5, wherein the cannula includes a handle.

7. The repair device of claim 6, wherein each of the first and second inserters includes a handle coupled to the corresponding shaft.

8. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the flexible strand is a suture strand.

9. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the flexible strand includes a slip knot.

10. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the flexible strand is coupled to the first and second anchors such that tensioning the flexible strand rotates the first and second anchors after the first and second anchors are deployed by the first and second inserters outside the soft tissue.

11. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the distal portion of the first elongated shaft of the first inserter includes a sharp edge defined by a slanted surface.

12. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the first and second planar end faces of the first anchor are perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis of the first anchor.

13. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the first planar end face and the second planar end face of the first anchor each includes a semi-circular portion.

14. The repair device of claim 13, wherein the semi-circular portions end at planar surfaces.

15. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the soft tissue is a meniscus and the repair device is configured for repairing a tear in the meniscus.

16. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the first anchor is a first tubular anchor and the first longitudinal passage is a first longitudinal bore that extends from the first planar end face to the second planar end face of the first anchor.

17. The repair device of claim 1, wherein the first longitudinal passage includes a longitudinal bore that extends at least a portion between the first and second planar end faces of the first anchor.

18. A fibrous tissue repair device for repairing a defect in soft tissue comprising:

a first anchor having a first longitudinal axis and defining a first longitudinal passage between first and second ends of the first anchor, the first longitudinal passage having a semi-circular portion extending for at least a portion of the first longitudinal passage, the semi-circular portion ends at planar surfaces;

a first inserter having a first elongated shaft with a distal portion received along the first longitudinal passage of the first anchor, the first inserter having a buttress transverse to the first elongated shaft for abutting on the first anchor, the first inserter configured for deploying the first anchor outside the soft tissue;

a second anchor having a second longitudinal axis and defining a second longitudinal passage between first and second ends of the second anchor, the second longitudinal passage having a semi-circular portion extending for at least a portion of the second longitudinal passage, the semi-circular portion ends at planar surfaces;

a second inserter having a second elongated shaft with a distal portion received along the second longitudinal passage of the second anchor, the second inserter having a buttress transverse to the second elongated shaft for abutting on the second anchor, the second inserter configured for deploying the second anchor outside the soft tissue; and

a flexible strand coupling the first and second anchors.

19. The repair device of claim 18, further comprising a single cannula, wherein the distal portion of each of the first and second inserters passes through the single cannula.

20. The repair device of claim 19, wherein the cannula includes a handle.

21. The repair device of claim 20, wherein each of the first and second inserters includes a handle coupled to the corresponding shaft.

22. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the flexible strand is a suture strand.

23. The repair device of claim 22, wherein the flexible strand includes a slip knot.

24. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the flexible strand is coupled to the first and second anchors such that tensioning the flexible strand rotates the first and second anchors after the first and second anchors are deployed by the first and second inserters outside the soft tissue.

25. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the elongated shafts of the first and second inserters are substantially parallel.

26. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the first end of the first anchor includes a first planar end face and the second end of the first anchor includes a second planar end face, where the first and second planar end faces are transverse to the first longitudinal axis of the first anchor.

27. The repair device of claim 26, wherein the first and second planar end faces of the first anchor are perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis of the first anchor.

28. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the distal portion of the first elongated shaft of the first inserter includes a sharp edge defined by a slanted surface.

29. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the soft tissue is a meniscus and the repair device is configured for repairing a tear in the meniscus.

30. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the first longitudinal passage includes a longitudinal bore that extends at least a portion between the first and second ends.

31. The repair device of claim 18, wherein the first anchor is a first tubular anchor and a first longitudinal passage is a longitudinal bore that extends from the first end to the second end of the first anchor.

32. The repair device of claim 18, wherein at least one of the first anchor and the second anchor includes a separate strand loop, the flexible strand that couples the first and second anchors passing through the flexible strand loop to couple the first and second anchors.

33. A fibrous tissue repair device for repairing a defect in soft tissue comprising:

a cannula;

a first anchor extending along a first longitudinal axis between a first planar end face and a second planar end face of the first anchor, the first and second end faces being transverse to the first longitudinal axis, the first anchor defining a first longitudinal passage;

a first inserter having a first elongated shaft with a distal portion received in the first longitudinal passage of the first anchor, the first inserter having an integral buttress transverse to the first elongated shaft for abutting on the first planar end face of the first anchor, the first inserter configured for deploying the first anchor outside the soft tissue, the distal portion of the first inserter passing through the cannula, the distal portion extending distally from the buttress to a distal piercing end, the distal piercing end extending distally beyond the second planar end face of the first anchor upon the first planar end face of the first anchor abutting the buttress;

a second anchor extending along a second longitudinal axis between a first planar end face and second planar end face of the second anchor, the first and second planar end faces being transverse to the second longitudinal axis, the second anchor defining a second longitudinal passage;

a second inserter having a second elongated shaft with a distal portion received in the second longitudinal passage of the second anchor, the second inserter having an integral buttress transverse to the second elongated shaft for abutting on the first planar end face of the second anchor, the second inserter configured for deploying the second anchor outside the soft tissue, the distal portion of the second inserter passing through the cannula, the distal portion extending distally from the buttress to a distal piercing end, the distal piercing end extending distally beyond the second planar end face of the second anchor upon the first planar end face of the second anchor abutting the buttress; and

a flexible strand coupling the first and second anchors.

34. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the flexible strand is a suture strand.

35. The repair device of claim 34, wherein the flexible strand includes a slip knot.

36. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the elongated shafts of the first and second inserters are substantially parallel.

37. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the first longitudinal passage has a first semi-circular portion and the second longitudinal passage has a second semi-circular portion.

38. The repair device of claim 37, wherein the first semi-circular portion extends for at least a portion of the first longitudinal passage and the second semi-circular portion extends for at least a portion of the second longitudinal passage.

39. The repair device of claim 38, wherein the first and second semi-circular portions end at planar surfaces.

40. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the first anchor is a first tubular anchor and the first longitudinal passage is a first longitudinal bore that extends from the first planar end face to the second planar end face of the first anchor.

41. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the first longitudinal passage includes a longitudinal bore that extends at least a portion between the first and second planar end faces of the first anchor.

42. The repair device of claim 33, wherein at least one of the first anchor and the second anchor includes a separate strand loop, the flexible strand that couples the first and second anchors passing through the flexible strand loop to couple the first and second anchors.

43. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the distal portion of the first elongated shaft of the first inserter includes a sharp edge defined by a slanted surface.

44. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the first and second planar end faces of the first anchor are perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis of the first anchor.

45. The repair device of claim 33, wherein the soft tissue is a meniscus and the repair device is configured for repairing a tear in the meniscus.
