Abstract

A system for treating a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation includes one or more substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels extending from at least one shaft. One or more heater sources are located in one or more heater wellbores coupled to at least one of the substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels.

Claims

1. A system for treating a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation, comprising:

one or more substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels extending from at least one shaft;

one or more heat sources located in one or more wellbores coupled to at least one of the substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels, wherein at least a portion of at least one of the heat source wellbores is positioned substantially horizontally in the formation, wherein at least one of the heat source wellbores extends between two of the substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels, and wherein at least some part of the at least one heat source wellbore is located in a portion of the subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation below the two substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels; and

one or more transformers electrically coupled to one or more of the heat sources, at least one of the transformers being located in at least one of the tunnels, the tunnel with at least one of the transformers being a different tunnel than the tunnel coupled to the wellbores with the heat sources.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising one or more production wells coupled to one or more of the tunnels.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising one or more impermeable barriers in the tunnels configured to seal the tunnels from formation fluids.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the tunnels has an average diameter of at least 1 m.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one shaft has an average diameter of at least 0.5 m.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one shaft is substantially vertically oriented.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one shaft extends between the surface of the formation and at least one of the tunnels.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the heat sources is an electric resistance heater.

20. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one seal between the tunnel with the transformer and the wellbores with the heat sources.

21. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one transformer being located in a chamber coupled to at least one of the tunnels, the tunnel coupled to the transformer chamber being a different tunnel than the tunnel coupled to the wellbores with the heat sources.

4. A method for treating a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation, comprising:

providing one or more shafts;

providing one or more substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels extending from at least one of the shafts;

providing one or more wellbores extending between at least two of the tunnels, wherein at least some part of at least one wellbore is located in a portion of the subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation below the two substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels;

providing one or more heat sources to at least one of the wellbores; and

providing one or more transformers to provide power for at least one of the heat sources to at least one of the tunnels, the tunnel with the transformers being a different tunnel than the tunnel with the wellbores for the heat sources.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising providing heat from at least one of the heat sources to at least a portion of a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation to mobilize at least some hydrocarbons in the formation.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising providing heat from at least one of the heat sources to at least a portion of a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation, and producing formation fluids from the portion.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the wellbores is a production wellbore.

8. The method of claim 4, further comprising providing one or more impermeable barriers to seal the tunnels from formation fluids.

9. The method of claim 4, further comprising sealing the shafts from the tunnels, after providing the heat sources, to inhibit fluids from flowing between the shafts and the tunnels.

10. The method of claim 4, further comprising at least partially isolating heating sections of the heat sources from the tunnels such that fluids are inhibited from flowing between the heating sections and the tunnels.

16. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the tunnels has an average diameter of at least 1 m.

17. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the shafts has an average diameter of at least 0.5 m.

18. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the shafts extends between the surface of the formation and at least one of the tunnels.

22. The method of claim 4, further comprising providing at least one seal between the tunnel with the transformer and the wellbores with the heat sources.

23. The method of claim 4, further comprising providing one or more transformers for at least one of the heat sources to at least one chamber coupled to at least one of the tunnels, the tunnel coupled to the transformer chamber being a different tunnel than the tunnel with the wellbores for the heat sources.

25. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the wellbores extending between at least two of the tunnels is positioned substantially horizontally in the formation.

19. A method of treating a subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation, comprising:

providing heat to the subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation to mobilize at least some of the hydrocarbons in the formation, the heat being provided from one or more heat sources in one or more wellbores extending from one or more substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels, at least a portion of the heat source wellbore being positioned substantially horizontally in the formation, at least one of the heat source wellbores extending between two of the substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels, at least some part of the at least one heat source wellbore being located in a portion of the subsurface hydrocarbon containing formation below the two substantially horizontal or inclined tunnels, at least one of the tunnels extending from a shaft, and at least one transformer for providing power to at least one of the heat sources being located in an additional substantially horizontal or inclined tunnel different from the tunnels from which the wellbores extend.

24. The method of claim 19, further comprising at least one seal between the tunnel with the transformer and the wellbores with the heat sources.
