Abstract

An apparatus for irradiating a liquid sample with acoustic energy to generate cavitation in the liquid sample is provided. The apparatus includes a source and is adapted to receive a cartridge in such a way, that the apparatus focuses the HIFU waves emitted from the source onto a liquid air interface that is present within the cartridge. This focusing is performed when the cartridge is inserted into a receiving section of the apparatus.

Claims

1. An apparatus for irradiating a liquid sample with acoustic energy to generate cavitation in the liquid sample, the apparatus comprising:

a receiving section for receiving a cartridge containing the liquid sample with an air volume above the liquid sample, wherein the boundary between the liquid sample and the air volume is a liquid-air interface;

a source for emitting high intensity ultrasound waves into the cartridge; and

a control unit for causing the high intensity ultrasound waves to be focused at a focus position within the cartridge to create a fountain of liquid above the liquid-air interface within the cartridge, said fountain of liquid including returning liquid droplets that fall back onto the liquid sample as nucleation elements that induce cavitation in the liquid sample.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said high intensity ultrasound waves having a frequency in the range of 0.2 MHz to 10 MHz.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the high intensity ultrasound waves emitted by the source lyse cells within the liquid sample inside the cartridge.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprising a completely dry coupler for transferring the high intensity ultrasound waves into the cartridge when the cartridge is received in the receiving section.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprises a fully solid coupler for at least partially transferring the high intensity ultrasound waves from the source to the cartridge.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprises a unit selected from the group consisting of:

extraction unit, a nucleic acid amplification unit, a reagent storage unit, a detection unit for measuring a physical parameter of the liquid sample, and any combination thereof.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said focus position is located on the liquid-air interface within the cartridge.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said focus position is located above the liquid-air interface within the cartridge.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said focus position is located below the liquid-air interface within the cartridge.

13. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises a focusing element to focus the high intensity ultrasound waves at the focus position.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the focusing element includes a lens.

15. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein a focal length of the focusing element is longer than the distance from the source to the liquid-air interface.

16. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein a focal length of the focusing element is shorter than the distance from the source to the liquid-air interface.

17. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a focal length of the source is longer than the distance from the source to the liquid-air interface.

18. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a focal length of the source is shorter than the distance from the source to the liquid-air interface.

19. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said cartridge is comprised of a polymer-based material.

20. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises a movable plunger for adjusting a volume of air above the liquid-air interface.

21. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said apparatus further comprises a three-dimensional positioning system controlled by said control unit, wherein the three-dimensional positioning system positions the cartridge relative to the source.

22. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said control unit adjusts at least one of the following parameters:

power level of the source, the focus position, and shape of a focal spot associated with the focus position.

7. A method for irradiating a liquid sample with acoustic energy to generate cavitation in the liquid sample, the method comprising the steps:

emitting high intensity ultrasound waves at a source;

transferring the high intensity ultrasound waves from the source to a cartridge containing the liquid sample with an air volume above the liquid sample, wherein the boundary between the liquid sample and the air volume is a liquid-air interface;

focusing the emitted high intensity ultrasound waves into the cartridge to create a fountain of liquid above the liquid-air interface within the cartridge; and

inducing a cavitation process in the liquid sample by liquid droplets of the fountain falling back onto the liquid sample as nucleation elements.

8. A computer program element to execute the method for irradiating a liquid sample with acoustic energy to generate cavitation in the liquid sample according to claim 7.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of a computer program which, when executed by a computer, result in the performance of the steps according to claim 7.
