1. A method for monitoring the condition of a vibration sensor mounted to an outer surface of a system, the vibration sensor provided for sensing vibrations of the outer surface of the system, the method comprising:
- receiving vibrations of the outer surface of the system at the vibration sensor;
outputting sensor data by the vibration sensor, the sensor data including;
data representative of the vibrations of the outer surface of the system; and
data representative of a natural frequency of the vibration sensor;
monitoring the sensor data output from the vibration sensor comprising monitoring both the data representative of the vibrations of the outer surface of the system and the data representative of the natural frequency of the vibration sensor; and
upon a change in the data representative of the natural frequency of the vibration sensor, flagging the vibration sensor.

Abstract
A system and method for monitoring the condition of a vibration sensor in a system. Vibrations are received in the system at one or more vibration sensors. Sensor data is output by the vibration sensor(s). The sensor data includes data representative of the vibrations in the system and data representative of a natural frequency of the corresponding vibration sensor. The sensor data output from the vibration sensor(s) is monitored, and upon a change in the data representative of the natural frequency of a vibration sensor, that vibration sensor is flagged.

15. A system for monitoring an electric generator comprising:

at least one vibration sensor that receives vibrations of an outer surface of the electric generator, the at least one vibration sensor including a mass-spring system and outputting sensor data including; data representative of the vibrations of the outer surface of the electric generator received by the corresponding vibration sensor, the data representative of the vibrations of the outer surface of the electric generator obtained using at least the mass-spring system; and data representative of a natural frequency of the mass-spring system of the corresponding vibration sensor; and a processor that monitors the sensor data output from the at least one vibration sensor, wherein the processor is adapted to flag a corresponding one of the at least one vibration sensor whose data representative of its mass-spring system natural frequency changes. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
